Hello,

We're golf fans - we also like to play golf, tennis, hike, and explore new places, particularly cities, state parks and nature sanctuaries. Wondering if there is anything to do around Pinehurst or within 25-50 miles the week of the U.S. Open championship when not watching golf. We are considering going, but someone(from California, who has never been there either) said that there isn't anything else around there besides resorts and the closest major airports are 75-80 miles away, plus it is probably getting late to book accommodations in proximity to the tournament. Actually playing golf is probably out given that golf fandom will be occupying the area. Thanks!

There's a Pinehurst exit off I-95 but it's not like Pinehurst is that close. Pinehurst is about 50 miles NW of Fayetteville and probably close to 100 miles from Charlotte. That area doesn't seem to be blessed with a lot of things to do but hopefully, some will weigh in and show me wrong!

Having been to Pinehurst several times for golf trips with buddies (yes, it's indeed a mecca for that, second only to The Masters), and again once with my wife
on a most enjoyable 2-night stayover on the way farther north (albeit during a non-event time),
I can vouch for the fact that there's not much to do there in the immediate small isolated community except for perusing the dozen (or less) shops and cafes.
And those will be thoroughly inundated during a major event such as the US Open Golf Tournament. There's absolutely no way I would even be in the vicinity unless
I were there with diehard golfing buddies who only wanted to witness the tournament "up close and personal". That is, saying "you were there".
And you'll need to purchase a cap to show off...... but mostly to prove it.
Not to minimize the greatness of the place, as its existence and historical importance is firmly entrenched, but just meaning to expound on the reality.
Frankly, a greater percentage of the US Open Golf Tournaments are in locations that are pretty far from "things to do" other than watching golf from the ropes.
