People fleeing hot spots to their summer homes

So we are at our Michigan lake house now. We left the Chicago area and brought food with us. We haven't been to any stores here. We did go hiking with the dogs and talked to a couple of neighbors from afar. The locals call the Illinois owners "FIP"s for F'ing Illinois People so there is some minor animosity between locals and seasonal people. Having said that, we are following all the rules and self quarantining at least 14 days but probably indefinitely. I hope that problems don't escalate!

Deb Brown Thanks for practicing the 14 day self Quarantine. They called us fudgies when i was a kid in the 70's and we went to our lake cottage near Charlivoix. Dont take it personal where all a little nervous about this Covid 19.

I spoke to a good friend who lives in Manhattan. She said, if she had a summer home, she would leave the city and go. She said Central Park is full of people (she lives across the street from the park) and that it is very hard to practice social distancing of 6’. She and her family are sheltering in place but sometimes have to go out for food. It is unavoidable. It sounds like it is really bad to be in NYC now. She said they thought of renting a home outside the city but no one wants New Yorkers. I hope they do not get sick because of their age (59 and 69) and my friend has had some health problems in the past. While they are older, they have two kids so it is hard to quarantine them completely. Her 17 year old goes out for runs. Her younger son enjoys being home. I hope the kids do not bring something home. It sounds like they are being careful and the kids are cooperating.

We have a heavy influx of people in town from NY, NJ and CT that are fleeing to their summer homes here. I can't blame them one bit, I would do it to. But, I didn't realize how many people are trying to flee that don't have 2nd homes. I called a local real estate broker today that I knew did rentals in town. She said none of the summer rentals that are usually vacant this time of year are open because of people coming in from out of town. We are considering having DH stay somewhere else during this time since he has to go to work and deal with the public. Just a thought, but may become a reality.

Yesterday, the state of MA declared that hotels, Air BNB, VRBO etc can only be used now by essential workers in the state. The cape has a petition circulating with 1000s of signatures requesting a closure of the bridges. Wow....crazy times.

Oh my gosh I remember being called a fudgie as a kid... My parents owned a cottage on Lake Charlevoix, our cottage was located near the Ironton Ferry. I loved taking our pontoon into town to pick up groceries....some wonderful memories.

We have some from NY and MA here in Old Saybrook,CT. Some call them tourists, we call them taxpayers. The tax on a 1.5 million dollar waterfront cottage is about $20,000.

We walk most days about 3 miles to an association beach and roads along the water. We have never seen so many people walking. Most respect distance, but on a Sunday about 1 1/2 weeks ago, as we walked past an illegally parked NY Range Rover, the family of four walked diagonally across the street toward us and we almost collided while squeezed next to the car. Such arrogance.

In NYC the districts most affected with corona do not have the income levels to own vacation properties here, and we don't have too many, so we're not too concerned.
