Hi everyone,

I will be creating and/or saving documents as PDF docs to add to a website. Can I do this in Reader or do I have to download Acrobat? If so, is Acrobat free or is this purchased software?

Thanks in advance,

Kathy

That depends on your computer and the software you are using. On a Mac, when you choose Print you will see an option for PDF, and can save as a PDF file. This is a system feature, so works no matter what application you are running.

If you aren't a Maccer, look under Print or perhaps Save As or Export on your software, and see if there's a PDF option, which might be listed under Formats or Options.

If not, no, you can't do it with Reader, you will need other software to save as PDF. I don't think it necessarily has to be Acrobat....but I don't know since I can do it without special software.

Adobe is not free to create PDF files. However, I need to create them all the time for work and I have been using Cute PDF Writer forever. It's a free program and is as easy as pie to use. Whatever program you use to create the intial file, you choose 'Print' and select Cute PDF Writer as your printer and it creates the document in PDF format. Best ever and FREE! You can download it here:

You can create PDF files directly from the current version of MS Office (you have to download a free add-on from Microsoft) and also from the free Open Office suite. (and probably other programs as well, as PJ noted.)

I also use cute pdf writer for saving other things as pdf files (boarding passes, receipts, etc, from the browser).

PDF is so useful!

I also use cute pdf writer for saving other things as pdf files (boarding passes, receipts, etc, from the browser).

I am always creating PDF files for examples such as those, as well as internet articles I want to save before they disappear (choose the printer-friendly option if there is one, then do whatever your system requires to save as PDF), or any kind of confirmation (e.g. an online purchase), and especially highly-formatted files to share with others or put online (syllabus, resume, bibliography).

You'll have a record of whatever it is without needing to physically print it and you don't have to figure out what to do with (and potentially lose) all those printouts!

I have a number of programs on my PC where files I create can be 'saved' as a PDF file, such as Corel, Photoshop, and more. I don't have the Adobe PDF creator program but assume it's in the other programs.

One thing to keep in mind is that the search engines like Google may not be able to 'search' through the text on a PDF article if that's of importance in getting your page view counts ujp.

I've got all the free pdf print options but sometimes the print-out contains all kinds of extra pages, headers, footers and other non-essential material. In order to crop pages, delete pages, highlight text, etc. I use Adobe Acrobat Pro. It's not free, but it is an incredible value.

One thing to keep in mind is that the search engines like Google may not be able to 'search' through the text on a PDF article if that's of importance in getting your page view counts up.

There are different types of PDF files, depending in part on whether the originating material was text or graphic, though even files that originated at text can end up being graphical (and hence unsearchable)PDF files. The PDF files that the Mac "prints" from text-based programs (word, excel) are text-searchable.

Another way to deal with that is to do a print preview to see which pages are superfluous, then when you "print" to PDF, just print the desired page range. You may also be able to do a page setup to specify no headers, fooders, etc, before "printing" to PDF.

If you do a google search for 'free pdf convertor' you will get a lot of shareware or trial software that will accomplish this task. I have PrimoPDF, which is a freebie. The problem with it is it doesn't retain any web links that are present in the file to be converted.

I say if you are going to be creating a lot of documents for PDF to spring for Adobe. I use it at work and find it faster than CutePDF that I use at home. There are also many other features that you can use also such as bookmarking and linking.

You can usually download a trial version of the software off of Adobe's site (I think it's good for 30 days). If you don't want to spend the money that Adobe is asking, check on e-bay for an older version that might qualify for an upgrade. To do this, you'd buy a version (say 6.0 for around $30) and then look for an upgrade (if you want the latest version). 6.0 works just fine, but there are probably many enhancements to the later versions that make them worth considering.

Keep in mind that a lot of software on eBay is "student" or "educator" software and you may be asked to acknowledge that you qualify for the software; it is otherwise a full version, working in the exact same manner as the "full retail" version.

Thanks so much for the expert advice. I downloaded CutePdf as there was no Microsoft add-on for Office 2003. Do you know if there is an option within Cutepdf to create forms that can be changed by the viewer?

I can always trust the advice given by Tuggers. :cheer:

That's correct. Office 2003 is not the current version of MS Office.

No, you can't create fillable pdf forms with cute pdf writer. It just generates read-only pdf files as if it were a printer.

Correct, to create fillable forms you will have to spring for Adobe or some other software that you can get online or at Office Depot, etc.

Thanks for the responses, I thought that may be the case. Fillable forms may or may not be necessary as the small business I work for is slowly moving towards e-commerce. I never realized how easy it could be to save .pdf forms until downloading Cutepdf. Its easy as pie as previously mentioned.

Thanks so much for your expert advice.

... Do you know if there is an option within Cutepdf to create forms that can be changed by the viewer....

I have made fillable forms by defining the form as a background or graphic or watermark behind a blank document (Word or otherwise), then you type wherever it lines up with the form.

It's a quick and dirty solution for something you don't want to fill out by hand, and I hate filling out forms by hand b/c of terrible handwriting and arthritis in my thumbs as well as the blanks on the forms often being too small. It also gives the advantage of correcting more neatly than using white-out.

Scan or download it, bring it in to Word as a graphic, define it as being behind the text, and type over the blanks in the form. You could define text boxes for each location, but I generally don't bother.
