A few years ago I won an auction on ebay and I was able to pay directly with a credit card. The purchase was through WantedWeeks. As many of you know there were nothing but problems trying to close with this company. Luckily because I did purchase with a credit card I received a full refund from the credit card company.

I am considering another purchase on ebay but I'm a little concerned since they state that payment can be made through Paypal which accepts credit cards. I do not believe Paypal provides the same level of security to me if problems are encountered. Can anyone comment on refund policy when using paypal vs directly through a credit card.

You have the same credit card protection. What you do not have through PayPal is any of their usual protection, as they do not guarantee real estate transactions.

I paid for an eBay timeshare through the PayPal system but used my own credit card instead of the PayPal card. The deal fell through when the selling company went bankrupt. My credit card company refunded me in fulll for what I had spent. I can't guarantee this would always work, but it did for me.

Thank you for your replies. I am not familiar with paypal but it sounds like your credit card transaction used to purchase through paypal is covered at least in some circumstances. I will have to try and confirm with paypal and then my own credit card company to verify before I make any substantial purchases.

At least when you go thru Paypal, you do not have to give your credit card # to an unknown TS seller...not always ethical sellers.

it sounds like all you have to do is dispute the charge and your credit card company will refund your money..

dont you have to "prove your case?"

I dont think I would want to sell you anything if all you are concerned about is the ease of reversing the deal

The reason I like pay pal, is that my customer doesn't see my bank account number, like they would if they were to wire funds, and I dont see their credit card number...neither one of us has enough info to get into the others account after the transaction

And by the way I believe paypal has a dispute procedure for the buyer to follow if they are dis-satified and the merchant doesnt make things right

I just made an e-bay TS purchase from CJ timeshare and their closing company gave me the option to pay for the purchase via paypal or credit card.

No experience with any disputes (thankfully) but I did call PayPal when I started renting so that I understood how I am protected as well as those renting from me. I almost exclusively use PayPal.

My understanding is that if you pay with a credit card via PayPal and have a dispute, you need to pick which gives you the best protection and file with one or the other (I'm guessing a credit card would be the better option).

Yes, you still have to prove your case (as with any dispute).

Just don't file a dispute with both PayPal and your credit card, it will confuse matters and you'll end up going around in circles --- your credit card may not pay because you filed with PayPal and vice versa.

Is there an industry standard for paying for timeshares on ebay?

I have seen payment requirements for wire transfers, cashiers checks, or personal checks. Normally, this is a huge red flag and i immediately would disregard the auction as a scam.

But, i wanted to verify this is NOT industry norm. I prefer to use paypal cause they have some consumer protection if an issue arises.

While a lot of companies on eBay do not use pay pal as method of payment, pay pal offers a moderate level of security. As always --- if you are hesitant to send payment do your due diligence on the company if you feel leery at that point I would not pursue with the sale no matter how great the deal is.

I am pretty risk adverse, so i am always hesitant to send money via cashiers check or wire it doesnt matter how confident I am. Just that payment form alone causes the hairs on the back of my neck to stand to attention...lol

most real estate transactions especially those where buyer and seller and the title companies are in three different locations, and the property in yet another location, are now done with wire transfers, ...sometimes with certified funds...Most title companies where I practice real estate wont accept anything but wired funds

The standard payment method with most ebay items is paypal. even timeshares.because its quick and instant, but most sellers and transfer companies dont care where the money comes from. of course they wont complete the transfer until the check clears.

Ron, you make it sound like I am trying to do something unethical with your reply "I dont think I would want to sell you anything if all you are concerned about is the ease of reversing the deal" As I stated in my first post I was able to pay with a credit card which turned out to be a lifesaver for me when the deal turned sour because of the seller not processing the sale in a timely matter. Many other buyers lost thousands of dollars to that particular seller when they never closed on the purchase and because they did not pay with a credit card or their credit card co did not offer prtection. I remember some stated they filed a claim after 6 months and they were denied the claim because of time restraints on making a claim. I did have to prove my case which I did successfully. I asked my original question because I will never purchase a timeshare without having some type of protection in place. Search Tug for "wantedweeks" and you will understand why I feel this way. If you did not want to sell anything to me for my wanting to protect myself then I can honestly say your not the type of person I would want to do business with. I always enjoy the threads on Tug because I receive good advice on how to protect yourself when purchasing a timeshare but unfortunatel others interpret it if your doing something wrong. regardless of what anyone thinks I will always look to protect my interested.

Issue resolved sucessfully, use secure money transfers and the two parties do not do business with each other.

I may have come on a little too strong, sorry.
By all means protect yourself, but dont assume that because one timeshare deal didnt work out, everyone is out to get you..

But I do take issue with folks that go into a transaction looking for the way out, because they assume that the guy on the other side is a cheat...I know I might be naive, but I have better outcomes when I assume that the other guy is as honest and trustworthy as I think I am. Ive done business with a handshake for years and can count the times Ive been cheated on one hand. but I need all my fingers and toes to count the times Ive received more than I expected.

I find that when I expect the best I usually get it. and although Im not proud of it, when someone expects the worst of me..thats what they usually get.
