Time to rely on my TUG friends again!

Last year there was a thread about purchasing a Marriott gift card (to get bonus Marriott Rewards points), and then using that gift card to pay maintenance fees.

I can't seem to find the link to that thread, so any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Can't be done. I fell for this TUG trick last year. Our local grocery stores offer discounts on gas to the tune of 20 cents off per gallon for every $50 in gift card purchases. If you purchase enough gift cards you can get free gas or at least save a lot of money on a fill up.

Marriott is one of the gift cards you can buy. I was skeptical about the TUGGER trick of putting a "4" in front of the gift card number and using it as a visa but I still bought a small amount of gift cars ($350 worth) to try. Needless to say, it didn't work at all and I am stuck with all these gift cards. Just last month I was able to use $150 of them but I still have $200 of Marriott gift cards.

Don't try it -- unless you are okay with having a stockpile of Marriott gift cards.

jdunn1,
Its unfortunate that it doesn't work this year. But it did work last year. I paid close to 5k in MF doing the "4" trick and reaped the rewards of additional points. But alas....Marriott figured it out and squashed it this year.

I tried to make it work for all of last December and it never did. Maybe the gift cards that worked were not the ones sold at the grocery and drug stores. I'm just glad I didn't buy more gift cards for this tactic.

Oh well, there could be way worse things to be stuck with than a couple hundred dollars of Marriott gift cards. Right. At least it will be fun using them sometime.

That may be it. I bought mine from Marriott on-line and they did work last December.

worked for me last year, too. Is anybody having trouble paying their maintenance fees on line? I keep trying and all I get is a white screen after I put in the amount and click on the button to pay by credit card.

I had the same issue.

I called and paid them over the phone.

I think the cards bought at grocery and drug stores are the "Travel Card", these have specific exclusions and restrictions. Though for those using them at a hotel they act just like a gift card. Those bought online with Marriott are more of a true gift card and have few if any restrictions. That could be why those that you bought last year didn't work.

Nope, used a credit card.

It was the Marriott black card through Chase, so I will get 5 points per dollar.

I just tried to pay our $199 Club Dues with Gift Card bought from Marriott and OS wouldn't take it. Had to pay with Visa.
