Password Management Web Sites

We are like most computer users and have dozens of passwords for different web sites. I am aware that there are web sites that offer to help you create complicated passwords (that are hard to crack by the bad guys) and then they store them for you. They mention three of these sites (Passpack, Dashlane & 1Password) as good choices. I'm interested, but know nothing about this technology and wondered is any TUGGER's have tried them? If so can you explain how they work and how safe they are? I'm not sure if I feel safe getting someone else involved in storing my passwords, although it would be really nice to never have to remember them again. :wall:

I've used lastpass for the last few years and I love it. I even use the mobile app (fee based) on my phone and tablet.
 
I use LastPass as well.

Lastpass for me too. You just join, and every time you need to add or change a password, just right click in the box. A pop up window will open, and one of the options is generate a new password. There is probably a shortcut too. When setting this up, you can choose the parameters such as length, upper and/or lower case, numbers, and symbols ~ Ron
 
I'm really hooked on Dashlane. It installs a plugin for all of the browsers installed on your device. Once you login to Dashlane with the master password, it will automatically fill in fields in web pages that are prompting for input. If you want, it will fill in user names, passwords, addresses, or credit card information. The free version does not sync between devices. That's fine with me because I wouldn't use it on any device except my home computer.
 
I use SecureSafe (free) based in Switzerland. Works on the PC and has a nice App for my iThingies. Has a copy button for both user name and password you can use to paste into whatever site needs it.

OK, I got the message that Lastpass is the choice of several Tugger's, so after watching a super techy video on Lastpass, I signed up with them. DW & I each have laptops working off one network. We have a problem with Lastpass that we're hoping someone can explain how we can solve it. In some cases we use the same web site with different log ons and passwords. An example is we both have our own American Express cards, but use the same American Express site. When we try to add both accounts into Lastpass, it only allows the first one to be put in. This has us so frustrated, we are about ready to scrap the whole thing. We also find the only way to get tech support is to send them a message and that seems to be a negative.
Other Tugger's that use Lastpass, must have run into this and we are hoping you can help us.

I tried Dashlane and had to remove it after two days. It kept popping up on fields that were not passwords; I'd be looking at a paper or maybe at the keyboard, and I'd find that I'd typed my address into some Dashlane field and hit Enter, and it had digested that data.

I've used other client-based programs before, and liked the ones where I had to right-click to tell it "this is a password; memorize it". In fact I still use Softek OmniPass from 2004; it came from APC, the backup power people somehow. It will remember different passwords for the same site for different Windows users, but if you both use the same Windows account I'm not sure it will remember to use one password for username "romeo" and a different one for "juliet".

Of course, the goal is to have a web-based repository so you can access your passwords from every computer. So I'll give Lastpass a try.

No clue on lastpass but SecureSafe allows multiple user names and passwords for the same site for the same account.

If you're using separate laptops, you can just setup separate lastpass accounts. But you can also have two accts saved to one profile. I have a few so like this. Make sure neither of your Amex account is set to auto login.

This isn't that difficult. I have several accounts for different services and I may select any from the pull-down menu when I get to the login page. Don't forget up can also add a password manually to LastPass. I also use it to securely keep credit card numbers to make it easy to fill out forms, etc.

I use Dashlane and DH uses Lastpass. I have a slight preference for Lastpass but both work well for our needs.
 
Dumb question which one is best for Microsoft Windows 8.1 ?

I don't like hardware tokens since it's yet one more thing to keep, but they are reliable. I've got one from my bank in order to validate international wires and it's the silliest thing since I just leave it on my desk or else I'd lose it. The standard phone app from Duo is better and works similarly - you can have the app generate a token number instead of a separate physical device, which should work outside the country. I'll be in Canada next week and will try it myself.
