We will be staying at the Grand Waikikian and are hoping to explore the island (not just stay in Waikiki area) most days, but the parking fees are outrageous. Has anyone had any success parking at one of the lots nearby?

You may be better off doing one-day rentals as needed. This way no parking and certainly cheaper than getting a car at the airport for the duration. We're staying at Lagoon for two weeks early next year, and not getting a car. We'll do dailies as needed for exploration.

Cheers.

Hi there. My recommendation whenever we go is to park at the Hale Koa Parking lot for the month. As of a couple days ago it's 230? And we stay for a week. Saves you from the outrageous 65 per day cost.

And doing dailies could be a way to go, but renting a vehicle for 1 week is cheaper than 2 days of car rental and you have more ability to move about and etc. Last checked one day is already about 100+ taxes and fees

I should also add it isn't all that difficult to walk from Hale Koa and get the car to pick up the family at grand waikikian (we're staying there) and have others staying at lagoon and kalia. I learned about this place while staying at grand islander. All 5m walk?

There's the monthly parking pass offered at Hale Koa parking garage (see pdf) and parking around the marina area (expand post below with YouTube video link).
There's also the Public Bus for sightseeing in Honolulu and Pearl Harbor (see thread below).

Update..

There’s a detailed YouTube video that shows the parking areas around the marina (link)
There’s also a detailed Yelp review regarding marina parking (link)

Must you be a veteran to use the Hale Koa parking lot?

No, there's a monthly rental rate for the General Public (open the PDF in post #6).
I've used it several times. You'll get access to the parking garage and the open parking lot nearby.

The Hale Koa parking garage entrance is the first light on Kalia Road after the Hilton Hawaiian Village main entrance/driveway on Maluhia Road. The car has to enter and exit on Maluhia Road but once parked you can walk in/out of the walkway entrance across the street from the Kalia Tower.

The monthly parking pass can be purchased at the office located at the parking garage entrance. Daily office hours the last time I checked was 8:30 am to 5pm.

Funny, after talking about dailies, this got us thinking about a longer-term rental. Interestingly, renting from the airport is not much more than renting from a city location 20 minutes from HHV. That's rare these days.

If we do keep it for 2 weeks, the Hale Koa rate is very cheap.

Cheers.

Reminder...
Just like any other major city, it's best to avoid peak rush hour otherwise you'll get delayed in bumper to bumper traffic ;)

Not only do you not have to be a veteran to use this parking lot, I have noticed that the top level of the lot is getting much more filled than in previous periods so many more people must be using it. The lower level is usually so filled that there are few if any spaces.

I am looking at the top level of the parking lot as well as the rest of Fort Derussey, the Hale Koa, and Diamond Head right now.

The Hale Koa has a number of banquet rooms. You should expect parking on Friday and Saturday afternoon and evenings to be fuller during peak reception and banquet times.

Luckily we've never had to park on the top level.:)

As I mentioned above, there's a parking lot as well further down on Kalia Road (across the street from the US Army Museum). See the BLUE Highlighted areas on the map below for the garage and lot. But you need to purchase the monthly parking pass at the garage which gives you access to both locations.

The CONs are that it is further away from HHV (closer to HGVC Hokulani) and has a single entrance and exit lane.

The Fort Derussey over flow lot is great for stays at Hokulani.

Thank you all! I think we will try with the Hale Koa or Marina parking! I got a really cheap weekly rental from the airport through costco (less than $200), so I definitely want to stick to the weekly rental vs individual days.

As relatives that were staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Lagoon Tower did not want to pay the $75 a day parking fee, they decided for their trips to and from the airport and a day trip to the North Shore (with a stop at the Dole Plantation on the return portion) to use "private" transportation. Specifically, they called a woman named Joanie at Charley's Taxi, and arranged for her to be their transportation for those trips. As the woman works for and is licensed through Charley's Taxi (a very well rated taxi company in Honolulu), there were no issues with shady deals or changed rates or whatever.
I do not know exactly what they paid, but pretty certain it would beat a day's rental and parking wherever and they were very happy with their trips. We have given her name and number to about 5 different groups of people and each one has had nothing to say except good and better words. The key is to contact her a couple of days ahead of time and set up an appointment with her. If you are flying in and want to get to the Grand Waikikian, she will take your name, airline name, and flight arrival time. When you arrive, she will give you directions to the area where she is required, by the airport, to wait. I have asked and received her permission to provide her information here: Name: JOANIE; phone #808-216-5721 Again, we've used her a number of times with no hiccups and even sent our daughter and niece separately and alone with her to the airport for their return flights home.
Yes, the Hale Koa parking garage is easy to get to from the HHV and is our go-to parking for any multiple days we rent a car. However, when we stay at the HHV, we rarely rent a car on any of our trips now. Our transportation to and from the airport or something specific away from the HHV is Joanie at Charley's taxi. Locally, I walk and or use The Bus.
Whatever you decide, I hope your trip to Honolulu is wonderful.

Oh, yes, Joanie drives a late model white SUV and is a marvel at packing our always too much luggage, even with 4 or 5 people.

Hmmm...
Folks, please be careful, the OP may be sincere, but they joined in 2017 with only 4 posts (all 4 posts were made today).
To be safe, I suggest that you contact Charley's Taxi directly and request "Joanie" for your pickup vs dialing some number a stranger posted on the internet. ;)
If she's legit and you feel comfortable then you can discuss further arrangements during your ride from the airport.

If you are parking for a week the Hale Koa monthly rate of $220 is an awesome deal. However, if you are parking for only a night or two the general public rate of $79 isn't any better than other options.
