We always had a rental car and parked the car at Hawaii Village in the past for our vacation week. This year, as car rental at $800/week and daily parking rate at $70, we are considering to take Uber/Lyft from HNL to Lagoon Tower and back to airport, and rent a car as needed for 2-3 days to visit attractions; or trying to find a more reasonable priced garage outside Hawaii Village.

Any suggestion or comment are highly appreciated. Thank you.

Hale Koa Monthly Public Parking is $200 for the month.
It's right across the street from HGVC Grand Islander. Daily office hours 8:30 am to 5pm

We always rent as well and were planning to skip it for this trip due to the high rental rates.
But luckily we found a lower weekly rate at HNL via Costco after constantly checking for lower rates ($450/wk for a compact car with Alamo).

We arrived on Saturday but our car rental started on Sunday since the car rental rate was significantly cheaper. We used Charley's Taxi ($29 flat rate) from the airport to the Lagoon Tower on Saturday and then took the Bus back to the airport on Sunday to pickup the car.

Another suggestion on car rentals - Autoslash.com.

You can use them for an initial rental as their rates are often good. Even with a rental from elsewhere, they will track and let you know if they find anything better.

Cheers.

There's also parking by the marina

Check rates everyday as in my experience rates go down significantly the last 30 days or so. Had the same issue last year while at Lagoon and checked the day before we left and was able to get my normal $30 a day rate.

Through which site? Discount or Corporate rate? Airport or Waikiki pickup/drop off ?

Marina parking - $1/hour. Plan your activities for the whole day, park for 10 hours, and that's only $10/night. We stayed for 7 night but had a car for 3.

What we did is only rent the car for the days we needed via National located in HHV. We rented two days in a row and they just let us park in the garage (return each day but we kept the car keys). So effectively, the car price at the time was less than paying for parking. We also rented National from the airport for a day but returned the car at National HHV (no extra charge). This was 3-4 years ago.

FYI: The rental company on property is now Enterprise. Daily rates were more than $100 with taxes in March when I was there.

Used Charley's taxi for our visit to HHV last December, flat rate to and from the airport. It was cheap around the area also, $15 to Ala Moana and $12 to International Mktplace.

We have NEVER rented a car and have stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village for over 1000 nights over the last 13 years. We have rented it for a day at a time to drive around the island and stop at North Shore and East Shore places. When we do rent a car we usually then park it in the open lot behind the Ilikai for $1/hour overnight and return it early the next morning. However, while we do a great deal of walking while we are in Honolulu we don't always walk. We take the BUS all the time to go to Blaisedell Shows, Honolulu Museum of Art, Bishop Museum, Diamond Head Theatre, and Downtown Honolulu, Kailua, and Kahala Mall. We have even taken the BUS to the Airport and Arizona Memorial but that is a long trip so you may want to taxi or Uber it for those. We have taken the Bus around the entire island a few times but with stops that is an all day trip.

I typically use carrentalsavers as they apply most discounts automatically but every once in a while I find it best to plug in my USAA rate directly into various rental car websites. Last summer in HNL when I got that huge drop the day before I went straight through the Budget's website using USAA rate.

But when I went to KOA last fall, I got a sweet deal on a jeep from hertz ($215) for a 4 day rental. Had to check often as originally even the econo car was $500+.

I'll be back in KOA and HNL for about a month this summer and my goal is to spend under $1400 in rental cars. Pretty sure it'll happen. It always does.

I see a couple mentions of Charlie's Taxi. Can someone post a contact / web site for them? Thanks!

Here you go, Aloha.

Aloha and a good morning.
Thanks for that website information.
Aloha

I have used Charlies in the past and have been happy. I am planning to use them next month for our trip from the airport to HHV and back.

Does Enterprise Rental allow overnight parking at their lot since its office closes at noon or we should park at Marina overnight and return the car next morning? Aloha

You may return the car to the garage any time before it's due back and leave the keys in a dropbox near the rental cars. No need to park anywhere else on one-day rentals.

Lots of great advice here. Wanted to check to see if anything has changed since April.

I am looking to spend maybe three days in Waikiki at the beginning of June and then 5 days at Aulani. Family of four. Found a great deal for a car rental at $812 for 9 days (Tesla). However, parking is $62/n at HGVC (and parking is free at Aulani). While in Waikiki we would like to do Pearl Harbor.

While a great car rental deal for 9 days I am thinking of shortening the rental to 6 days (still a great deal at $612) leaving us without a car in Waikiki. Plan is then to do lots of walking in and around Waikiki and just Uber it to Pearl Harbor. On our checkout day, we would then use Charley’s Taxi to pick up the car rental back at the airport and then head to Aulani.

Thoughts on my plan? Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Update..

There’s a detailed YouTube video that shows the parking areas around the marina (link)
There’s also a detailed Yelp review regarding marina parking (link)

We skipped the car rental during our stay last year and used the public bus to take my brother-in-law to Pearl Harbor. You can purchase a Holo card at the ABC store. See thread below for details.

Our group also took the bus to Diamond Head and picked up a taxi on the way back.

You won't need the car in Waikiki. The six day plan will be fine. shaka

The only addtional thought I would have is that since Pearl Harbor is really in between Waikiki and Aulani and you will be haviing a car while at Aulani why not save the Pearl Harbor visit for when you are at Aulani.

While in Waikiki you have the beach and surfing to do as well as a Diamond Head hike and in Iolani Palace as points of interest and as you said walking in and around Waikiki.
