I will be staying here in May so I called the resort and asked how much the parking fee is now. Wait for it -- $32 per night! I will have to have a car because we are going to be there only 3 nights and have a lot of sight-seeing to fit in. The guy who answered the phone was very nice and helpful. He described the studio for me. At that is available for my dates are the studio and the 1 bedroom Presidential. There is such a price differential it feels like throwing my points away for the 1 bedroom but my daughter says I snore and the 1 bed might keep the peace.

There is free parking around the resort, but it's first come, first served. Mostly along Ala Wai Blvd, along the canal that runs east / west a block north of the resort. There is also limited free parking along some of the north / south streets.

I'd also read that they're looking into making it an all paid / metered parking in the surrounding downtown area.

Check for local parking apps, you might be able to cut it down $5 - $10 / night. Try www.bestparking.com/honolulu-parking/

Roberts Hawaiian shuttle will take you to and from the airport and resort - make a reservation for it; it's cheap. Rent a car each day and return it at night. There are car rentals agencies located in Waikiki and easy to walk to. That's how we do it to avoid parking and it saves money.

That is a great idea but it won't work for us, as we need a car right from the airport. My daughter was born in Honolulu and this is the first trip back since she was a baby. We are going to drive by the hospital where she was born and then stop at Pearl Harbor on the way to the resort. We will be parking at Fort DeRussy which is a short walk to Wyndham Beach Walk which is where it turns out we will be staying. But I do plan to drop the car at the airport the night before we leave and talk an airport shuttle back to Waikiki and then back to the airport in the morning so we don't have to deal with returning the car early in the am. We are only on Oahu for 3 days (also going to Kauai and Big Island) and we have to cram a lot into them.

Thanks for the tips!

Waikiki Beach Walk is in a great location. If you haven't been there before it's a block from historic Waikiki Beach and in the middle of the shopping district.

You can take the bus back to Waikiki from the airport. We took it to Pearl Harbor and enjoyed the city trip. It goes thru ChinaTown on the way back and past the police station with the statue on Hawaii 5o.

We're renting a car for two days next week and taking the bus to the airport to pick it up. The $1 senior fare is nice. We have a 3pm flight, so we can go for a drive after checking out.

Really? renting for individual days does not incur any additional fees than if you pick it up and keep it 3 or 4 days? Maybe skip a day in the middle too. We'll be staying there next year and hopping to other islands as well .. my wife is set on Waikiki Beach Walk so we'll be there.

It does seem central to the hubbub but looks like it has a view of parking and maybe a sliver of ocean if we're lucky. I am a sucker for views so I wonder if getting a 2 or 3 bedroom presidential assures us of some kind of view (are those toward the top?). I still wonder about Royal Gardens with it's canal view ..

You get a decent angled view from the balcony with the presidential's at Beach Walk. That is true of most units of the higher units from the balcony.

We rented from Dollar and there was not much difference between the daily and weekly rate. Extensions were easy, and the rate incl taxes was between $25-35 per day. And parking was $38 per.

We like the canal view from the Royal Gardens. Two years ago I requested a nice east side view for my wife's birthday and they gave me 10th floor southeast corner. We had a nice view of boating on the canel and a distant ocean view over the trees from the end of the lanai.

I requested a similar unit for next week. The pool area is very nice and I like strolling Kuhio with the smaller crowd. No stove for cooking in the studio which is ok with us.

See if you can get a condo facing the Ocean Walk Shops. It over looks a small park-like setting by the shops where you can hear music in the evening and watch Hawaiian type entertainment. Depending how high you are, on Fridays there are fireworks at the Hilton. The back side overlooks the pool, but also parking and other building, etc.

Even number rooms in MAIN TOWER [closest to the beach] are on street side with the best views. Do not get a 2 bedroom deluxe upper level they all face the parking ramp. I would recommend two deluxe lower on the 8th or 9th floor even number main tower or two bedroom Presidential even number main tower for the best views. Waikiki Beach Walk doesn't have one bedroom Presidential

You mean not much difference in RATE between the daily and weekly? Is ie $25-35 per day either way? How long does it take to pick up / drop off down in Waikiki? I suppose you still reserve it in advance?

Thank you! I've noted this info for when I call in for reservation / room hold.

Thank you ! So the Ocean Walk shops are on the 'street side' I am gathering.

When we were there in Feb - cars were readily available and the discount for a weekly booking was only a few dollars. It was taking us 45 minutes to an hour to get to the rental car location by bus.

But we really used the car for big trips. For shorter stuff - hiking Diamond Head, Bishop museum, etc we just used the bus.

So bus out to get the car, keep and park it overnight, and the return it the next evening.

Rental cars are within walking distance. 3-4 blocks. When leaving Beach Walk go right to the first corner and take a left on the main road. Not sure which rental car company though but there will be a couple on the right. Word of caution on who walks with you. Walk by Tiffanys about a block before the rental car co.

As noted above - a number of the hotels in the area have rental car desks where you can walk to rent a car. When we were there, the rates for the hotel cars were typically more than the rates at the airport+parking at the resort.

But a good option if you just need a car for the day and/or don't want the hassle of running out to the airport.

Even though the op is no longer staying at the Royal Garden, I'm updating our parking experience.

There is metered parking on the resort street and on other streets between 7AM an 6PM at $1.50 per hour, free parking at night. From our lanai, I noticed people staying at the resort parked overnight on the street.

About noon, we took the bus from Kuhio to Dollar rental on Nimitz near the airport. We picked up our car and then toured the Bishop museum arriving back at the resort about 5PM where there were two empty metered spots, so I paid $1.75 and another $2.00 at 7:12AM the next day. We drove around the island and returned about 4:45PM. There were 9 spots, so I took one in front of the door and the others were taken by 5:15. I did see someone checking the meters about 9:05AM, so I was glad that I paid. Credit card or quarters are used.
