Visiting an out-of-town friend at her house last spring for her daughter's jr-hi graduation, we parked our minivan in a bad place in our friend's driveway where she couldn't see it till it was too late. She backed into it broadside, ramming her rear bumper into the lower-rear quadrant of our passenger-side sliding door.

The car is a 2005 model that we bought used (via eBay) in November 2004. It's got about 60,000 miles on it. We've hauled so much stuff inside when it's in stow & go mode that the interior has about double that mileage. In short, we decided to live with the dent instead of springing for body work.

Till today.

Driving home after a bunch of errands, we spied a white Honda Odyssey emblazoned Paintless Dent Repair, with a phone number. We called (cell phone). The lady said they'd come out & give an estimate. We said we'd call back when we were within 20 minutes of home. We did. They showed up at 2PM -- about 10 minutes after we pulled into our driveway.

After sizing up the bent place, they say they'll fix it "perfectly" for $590. The Chief Of Staff says perfection is not necessary -- major improvement will be good enough. Agreement is reached on $500 for the job, & the guy goes to work right there in our driveway. (As the sun shifs he moves the car to keep it in the shady area -- pretty smart.) I head out to the bank to get some cash.

By 6:15, the guy was done. His partner asked us to come out & look. She explained that original factory paint is so tough & durable that they just about always can do a perfect job. However, because the door had been repaired & repainted earlier (before we got it -- which I had forgotten till just then) she said their driveway "paintless" repair job had created some tiny cracks in the body-shop paint & the prior repair made it impossible to smooth out the dented area as well as they would have been able to do otherwise. She pointed out the tiny cracks, but I couldn't see any. Neither could The Chief Of Staff. In any case, because of that limitation on how well they could smooth out our dent paintlessly, they reduced their price after the fact from $500 to $450.

When we called these folks, it was spur of the moment & shot in the dark -- we just happened to see their number on their van. They showed up promptly. They gave a reasonable estimate. They did the work the same day. They did a good job -- better than expected. Their actual charge was $50 below their estimate. By looking at the car, I can't tell it was ever dented. Who'd a-thunk ?

Alan, I'm glad you posted this as I have often wondered how this would work on a large dent as you have described. Two years ago I received a bunch of hail damage on my vehicle and no sooner did the hail end and we had 4 teams in town that use the procedure you described. My insurance company wrote me a check for $1400 on the spot 2-days after the storm and I went down to one of the crews that came to town for an estimate and they ended reparing the damage for $225 and did an incredible job. I watched them massage the dents out with these steel rods that they had in every shape and size and it was truly amazing. Since then I have watched for advertising for this type of procedure and haven't seen a thing. I would definately recommend it though.

One note for others regarding services like this. If the dent spans across a body crease (curve in the body as designed), or is very close to a crease, or is very close to an edge, these removal systems may not work.

I too had extensive hail damage last year. I brought my car (Honda Accord) to a body shop and they had 2 specialists come in to see what they could do. Both of them said that they could remove only about half the dents due to the location of the dents, and proximity to creases or edges. In total, I had just under 200 dents (think golf ball). I was not willing to have 100 dents left.

The labor would have cost more than just replacing all of my shell pieces on the body, so I got new door panels, a new roof (they had to peel the other one off), new hood, new trunk, pretty much a completely new body. The only thing was wasn't new was the left front quarter. $5800 in damages.

For the more advertureous!

We have sons that live to work on their cars. Several years ago we ran across something called "The DingKing"! The cost was under $20. The boys have pulled out then dents on their own cars and quite a few of their friends cars too! All of the 'jobs' turned out pretty well!
I have seen them in stores since then but they are a little hard to find. I wouldn't necessarily use this on a brand new car but for situations where you just want it pulled out, this thing does the job!

My understanding on this is the ding removing works on metal and not fiberglass or plastic. The reason I am saying this is I thought my Seibring convertible hood was metal until the nneighbor backed into it and low and hehold a series of spider web cracks leading me to the conclusion I had a fiberglass hood and not a metal one as I thought.

In summary, you got metal dings, then what you did works. However, fiberglass or plastic, read their warranty well and inspect before paying. However, if they can remove dings from fiberglass or plastic and it passes the chief-of-staff's inspection, who cares?

This is great information! Thank you so much for bringing it up.

I have a friend whose car was damaged by hail. Is there some trick to printing out this total conversation without all of the computer bar graphs etc.?

I just tried to copy all of the information and it made for very tedious reading with a lot of extra computer details.

thanks again for sharing

Under "Thread Tools," you can select Printable View -- or, just highlight & copy the parts you want & paste those into E-mail or word processor, etc., for printing, sending, etc.
