Using the owner discount can one reserve a week for a friend or must the owner occupy the week?

The owner must be present at checkin. You can reserve up to two rooms at the discount. That would mean the owner doesn't have to occupy, but should be there at checkin to qualify for the discount.

you're saying a "week"---by that you mean a rental. owner discounts only apply to rentals. and it applies to any length of stay.

so, why ask. just make the reservation, call later and say "so and so" will be checking in first.... it's fine.

and by the way, you can do this anyway. been doing it for years, and there's nothing wrong with it.........for family, for staff members, for friends.

My wife and I are both listed as owners on our Marriott timeshares. We need 3 rooms for a family reunion. Would she be able to reserve one room while I reserve the other two? She has her own Owner Number.

I don't see why not, just split them and book some under your name and some under hers.

I seem to remember a thread a few years back where someone was doing this fairly regularly. Marriott caught on and stopped it. I don't remember the details but it didn't work out favorably for the owner.

Yes people do this. Yes there is something wrong with and is against the rate rules.

Don't forget the additional 10% requires use of a Marriott Visa.

I tried a night at Boston's Custom House Tower to pull up the MOD rate rules:

Rate Rules
MVCI Owner Discount, based on availability, limited to 2 rooms per card member

Additional Information
MVCI OWNER DISCOUNT

- 25 PERCENT OFF RATE
- SPACE AVAILABILITY BASIS
- MAXIMUM 2 VILLAS PER STAY
- OWNER MUST BE PRESENT AT CHECK-IN
- DISCOUNT MUST BE CONFIRMED AT TIME OF BOOKING

Holding Your Reservation
- We will need a credit card number to reserve your room

Canceling Your Reservation (paraphrased)
- You may cancel your reservation for no charge until 1 day before arrival
- We will assess a fee of 1 night of your room charge plus tax if you must cancel after this deadline

When You Check In
- Please be prepared to show proof of eligibility for your rate (such as a membership card, corporate or government identification card, or proof of your age)

Modifying Your Reservation
- Please note that a change in the length or dates of your reservation may result in a rate change.

If you're a DC Member, the discount for cash stays is based on your DC status. This chart shows the 25% off for Standard, 30% off for Premier and 35% off for Premier Plus.

You can also get an additional 10% off of any of these rates if you use your Chase Marriott VISA.

I remember this also, though it was only about a year ago I think. Someone in Europe. Was booking on the MOD discount and then trying to rent the time out. Ended up getting their reservations canceled.

I could see them overlooking the odd MOD stay where the owner will "arrive later". Though if they see a definite pattern, there may be issues.

I just stayed for three nights in two villas at Sabal Palms using MOD. Had no issues whatever.

Yes, that poster was in Germany and he made a whole bunch of marriott.com reservations (with the MOD and other discount codes) that were later canceled by Marriott. In one case he rented 9 rooms in Thailand to a group who were on a golf outing and they found out at check-in that their reservations had been canceled. He was convinced that the rate rules didn't matter, that Marriott should not have been able to access his account to cancel anything.
