Be prepared that maint. fees will continue to go up, even when someone loses a job or becomes sick they will expect you to pay.

Oh well, so much for hoping that this being a foreign timeshare would help the situation!

Horsegoer, I don't like the idea that Divi reserves the right to go after you for the debt. They might be able to ask for interest, late payment fees, etc. Maybe you could offer to pay something if they would give you a document saying you are no longer the owner, and have no further obligation to them?
 
they will get money, that is for sure. Especially in this economy with less people traveling, it wouldn't be prudent to let people slide. If I were you I would attempt to settle. Most creditors are settling for 40%-60% of the total debt. I don't see why this should be any different. Let them make you an offer, and then make a reasonable counter-offer. Good luck.
