Our entire flight had Boarding Passes and Identification checked at gate by TSA

Flying today from MSP to West Coast
At the boarding gate
5 minutes before boarding to begin
Delta Gate Agent announces that TSA personnel would be checking boarding passes and ID before Delta agents would scan our boarding passes and let us on the plane
Everyone boarding had to go through the process
Two TSA Agents had us form lines to show ID and boarding passes
Identification had to be "real ID" ready
I use a passport card which I had readily available and a paper boarding pass
Took me 10 seconds to have it examined
You can imagine other folks had put their identification in purses, bags, etc., etc.
I would guess it added 10 to 15 minutes to the process
Nobody from Delta would discuss why this was being done
TSA ignored questions

Never seen it. Only people I have seen have been Customs and boarder patrol usually on international flights looking for people with a lot of undeclared cash. They typically don't check every one. Just based on their suspicion (if you are carrying over 10k and didn't declare, there is a certain amount of nervousness if you suddenly see them on the jet bridge).

A couple of people I know said they recently flew and didn’t need Real ID or a passport at all! They were just asked a couple of questions and waved on!

I have to be honest 10 ti 15 minutes for my safety is worth it
If you wanted to increase safety you should advocate for your local police to enforce the traffic laws on the freeway heading to the airport. That is always the most risky part of your flight experience.

I have to be honest 10 ti 15 minutes for my safety is worth it
I am all in on safety while flying
But
How is this adding to my safety
The TSA personnel had no scanners to check validity of Identification
They did not check carryon bags for possible banned items
They had no way to determine if a boarding pass was a fake
So I am at a loss as to the purpose
Time delay in boarding was negligible
I would be sitting in a chair at the gate
Or sitting in my seat on the plane
So what is the reason for TSA process

My daughter used to work at Disney. One of the funniest experiences was a family objecting to being filmed and having their biometrics recorded by Disney. I get it. Some people are super concerned about their privacy. After tolerating the father's nonsense for a bit the security finally said to the man, well sir maybe Disneyworld is not the best vacation choice for your family and directed him to the ticket booth for a refund. The man acquiesced to the security procedures pretty quick after that... :)

This is weird, as they had presumably already done exactly the same thing at TSA security just an hour before. Maybe someone got by them? Or they're looking for an individual.
If they were looking for an individual
They could have stood behind the Delta personnel
Watched as each person checked in
Examined the check in information as each person checked in
I am now greeted by Delta personnel as I check in with a repeat of my name and a thank you Mr_______

I get the fact that some people object to biometric security
Such as is being used at the time of entering TSA security area
This check did not involve biometric security
TSA personnel had no visible scanning equipment to check the validity of my or anyone else's identification
They did check to see if Driver's license had the "Real ID" mark on a driver's license
Since I used a Passport Card
There was very little scrutiny of my ID
I board in group 5
So I watched them check the ID's of the first third of the people boarding

I've had two flights in the last five years where this happened. It seemed to me to be a random thing and I wouldn't be surprised if it happens across US airports to at least a few flights a day.

It could be a random check or a training exercise but they could also be checking for an individual or child trafficking. They could be increasing security measures with Labor Day weekend and September 11th coming up. Both bring very real threat concerns.

Never had that happen before. Safety issues maybe? I would be fine with it.

We were once on an international flight that was greeted by armed TSA agents who lined the jetway and required we have our passports out and open to the photo page to display as we exited the plane.
It’s a LONG story but, in the end the foreign airline we were flying didn’t have clearance to land.

I know it’s not the same, but sometimes there’s something the airline did or didn’t do correctly behind the scenes you never find out about.

Are you sure they were TSA agents or CBP?
TSA agents typically do not meet arriving foreign (or any) airplanes, neither are they armed.

I think checking ID with your boarding pass is normal, at least in my experience. Took a flight to and from Canadian airports a few days ago and as always the announcement says have your ID and boarding pass ready to be checked before boarding the plane. I'm kind of shocked this isn't normal practice in the US.

We've experienced this on at least one occasion many years ago. Prior to the pandemic. So it isn't a new thing. While we may never understand the reason why they do this, that might just be the intent. It is possible that two people can switch boarding passes in the airport. Though not sure that would be the reason for the check. There was a time when manual checks without biometrics were all they had. Sometimes that is still good enough.

When flying internationally, gate agents have checked my boarding pass and my passport
Gate agents are employed by the airline
Not the Transportation Security Administration personnel

This happens quite a bit on outbound international flights in the US. The checks are conducted by the airline staff.

We were told TSA agents. Honestly it looked like a mixture of agencies. This wasn’t very many years after 9/11 and they were taking things VERY seriously.
