Hi, I had a reservation of a car for one week, and would like to choice the best way to pay toll roads, I red that if I paid with Dollar is expensive, also there are some roads that don't accept cash, I would aprecciate any help, thanks in advance

I can't seem to easily figure out how much the PlatePass costs with Dollar. The best thing to do would just set your GPS or GPS app to avoid toll roads. The main toll roads are going to be from the airport to the main tourist areas; Either Beachline (528) or 417. I beleive all of the Beachline toll booths have cash lanes. Depending on how much you are going to be driving around Orlando will depend on how many tolls you might hit. There aren't a lot of toll roads and they can easily be avoided or travel on them not even necessary if you are simply moving around the main tourist corridor from Universal down to Walt Disney World.

Where are you staying when in Orlando?

We will pick up the car at Sanford airport and stay in HI Orange Lake and planed to drive around Orlando parks area and may be to visit Daytona beach

Based on that, as long as you avoid the new express lanes (opening soon) on I4 through Orlando, you shouldn't really need to worry about tolls. There are no tolls in the regular I4 lanes both north and south. Just don't take the 417 down from Sanford. Driving back to Daytona Beach would take you along the same route. Driving over to Cocoa Beach though would be on the Beachline and would have tolls, but they should all have cash lanes as long as you don't take any exits along the way.

Another option would be to stop at a Publix and pick up a Sunpass. You can get the mini sticker that you have to take off at the end of your rental, or a portable which is a hard transponder.

I would also ask them when you pick up the car about how their toll program works. Some rental companies are better than others. You may find it won't cost you that much. But be careful, they may charge you for the service every day even if you don't use a toll. You might want to ask your question over in the Transportation forum on DISBoards. There may be more people over there with experience with Dollar in Orlando/Sanford.

Thanks, this information help me very much, I think pick up a sunpass is a good idea, just in case made a mistake and find me with electronic toll road. Dollar charge an adminitrative fee plus toll road

For future reference there is a visitor toll pass but only avaliable at Orlando airport it’s free
you only pay the tolls

Sun pass is good option for other airports

We use Waze as our GPS and have it set to avoid tolls. We won't pay tolls at all. So it's better to take an extra five minutes getting to the resort areas than to pay tolls, at least for us. Fortunately, all of our kids know that trick and none of us ever pays for the tolls in Orlando.

Super easy to add Waze.

I have a NC Quickpass I travel with. Just put it on the windshield of my rental car and add the license plate in the app and I’m good to go, and never have to pay the ridiculous price gouging money to the rental agencies for their various toll offerings!

Looking at the OPs profile, it indicates they are from Mexico. So they likely don't have a compatible transponder that will work in Florida.

True- they are pretty inexpensive though. I don't live near any toll roads so I literally have it just for when I travel so its a viable option. It was like $8 I think to buy the NC one, and there are no annual or monthly fees unlike some states.

Or the other option would be to buy the $5 sticker in Florida and do it that way.

I think is my best choice, hope to find a sticker in the airport or at Publix outside
They may also sell them at Walgreens and CVS stores.

We rented from Fox in Orlando in January. Their toll pass was imbedded into their license plate, and we were told that even with our E-Z pass (which we brought down with us), we may be charged double. From the airport, we went to the toll booth, and told the attendant to override the plate's toll responder. We tried to avoid toll roads after that because we did not know how we would be charged. If Fox's plate was charged, there was a $15 fee plus the cost of the toll, and we ended up getting caught for that twice.

Sunpass has a great feature - you can log in after you get the rental and register the license plate number and specify how long it is valid. You don't want that license tied to your account after returning the car !

Also pay a little extra to get the transponder that can be removed without causing damage. And then get your account setup.

Sounds like something Fox would do. Their reviews are horrible and this is another way to extort more money.

Yes, but they were about $300 cheaper than the others, so we made out okay in the end. However, their cars are older and we turned down 2 before we took one because they were in bad cosmetic condition.

I don't think that is true. When you go through a toll plaza, the first thing they check for is a transponder. Then they look within their system to see if there is a registered plate, then if nothing there they will finally look to platepass. The real issue is if the car has its own transponder, then there is the chance of double charges, but any car rental transponder I have seen has some method to deactivate it.

Budget's transponders have a way to deactivate.
Dunno about others.

On a 1-day rental, we meant to use it, but left it deactivated.
The agent said that if there's no pass, they just read the plate.
Once they do that, they'll know its a rental and invoice us.

First we thought that the Fox people were telling us that to get us to buy their pass. We were there for 4 weeks and only went on toll roads a couple of times. We asked the toll booth attendant at the first plaza we hit and he could not confirm or deny that we would be double charged.
So we just avoided toll roads.
