I'm wanting to take my nieces (age 5 and 6) to Disney next summer, but we are only able to trade through RCI. Could you recommend which resorts would be the best to try to get?

Here's some particulars:
1. Last time we took them to the beach, they really preferred playing in the pool, rather than the ocean. So, a good extensive pool area would be great! In fact, I'd like to spend about 3 days at Disney parks and the rest of the week hanging out at the condo, relaxing.

2. Do any of the condos in the area offer free shuttle to Disney resorts, or am I going to have to rent a car?

Although I've never stayed at any resort off Disney property, I think it's safe to say Orange Lake would be a good choice for you. River Island and Splash Lagoon are both fairly extensive pool areas (no personal experience, just passing along what I've read here).
OL also has lots of resort activities and amenities.

Regardless of the resort offering a shuttle to WDW, I would still rent a car. If you only visit WDW 2 or 3 days you may be okay with the shuttle, but you will lose the ability to come and go as you please.
For anyone visiting Disney every day of their vacation, a car is a must IMO.

Been there recently?

Diane, have you been there recently? Or anyone else? I'm able to pull Vistana, but the first two reviews I read were not too good. I read on and heard great things. I also noticed that the most recent RCI reviews were from 2005. Anyone been there since then and have an updated review?

Also, thanks, Carl. I like the River Island look and feel, but nothing is showing up for me right now on RCI. Perhaps I'll try again later. Is it tough to pull?

Go every year

Hello susan,we own 2 weeks at vistana.they have a total of 8 pools, from very large (super pool)to kiddie pool to smaller less crowded pools.super pool and cascades pool has restaurants with indoor/outdoor seating.Zimmies is a pool side restaurant/bar where the kids just love to get (virgin mudslides).Vistana also has their own pizza-hut,icecream shop, general store. We gave a week to a friend this year and she took her daughter and grand kids and they had a ball.they took shuttles to wdw every other day.You can private msg. me if you want any other info..also i have a entertainment book for orlando area that expires first of november--if interested. Jim

Thanks Jim

Thanks Jim! I've been reading all afternoon and the more I read, the more I like Vistana. I'm looking for next summer, so unfortunately, I won't be able to use your Entertainment book, but I appreciate the offer. :D

I just got back from Vistana. I had a great time, but I can see why there are so many negative reviews. The resort is divided into 8 or 9 sections. It looks like two of the sections are fairly new or recently refurbished, Cascades and Lakes. Both of these sections are really nice and I think most of the favorable reviews reflect that. The other sections look like they were built in the 1970's, and from what I could see, don't look nearly as nice inside. Just older and more worn, but still pretty large and comfortable looking. I think a lot of exchangers in a Sheraton level resort probably were expecting it to be more upscale. The older sections are clearly gold crown quality if they were in say Hilton Head or the Outer Banks, but in Orlando the expectation is higher. Unfortunately, it's a crapshoot in what you get. I got Lakes and was very happy, but I met a few people at the pool who were not happy about their older units.

I'd still get a car if I'm staying at Vistana. Car rentals in Orlando are some of the cheapest around. I've never paid more than $200 for a week (taxes inc.). The resort grounds is fairly spread out, although all of the units are probably easy walking distance to one of the three major pools/activity areas. If you get Lakes, Fountains I, and Fountains II, you will be very far from some of the resort's amenities (probably too far for 5 and 6 year olds to walk) like the tennis courts, a not very nice minigolf course, the general store (think hotel gift shop with 7-11 attached), and the Pizza Hut (though they deliver). If you call a bell hop, they will shuttle you to the visitors center or the other areas of the resort, but expect to wait a half hour or more.

While the store and resort restaurants are OK, there is also a ton of chain family style restaurants, a Walmart, an outlet mall, and a couple of grocery stores within a few miles of the resort. If you had a car, you would have access to them, rather than rely so much on the on resort facilities.

The bus actually costs something like $9 or $10 pp for exchangers. So renting a car is only slightly more expensive than the bus and a cab roundtrip from the airport.

Another downside of the bus is that it is not flexible, it has several set times in the morning and afternoon. While it stops at the Magic Kingdom for all times, it does a rotation for all of the other parks. For example, the bus only goes to Animal Kingdom at 8am and Epcot at 11 am.

Good to Know!

Thanks, esk444!

Is there any way to request a certain unit location online when exchanging? Or do you just take what you get assigned and hope to upgrade later? If I call RCI to make my exchange, can they tell me which section I'll be getting?

No, all the exchange units are pooled together. When you confirm with RCI, you confirm a certain size unit, nothing specific like some resorts do. You can request Cascades or Lakes if you preregister on Vistana's website in the "Diamond Lane" after you confirm the exchange with RCI. They didn't honor my request at check in to be near a pool or on the first floor. I've heard that lots of exchangers ask for Cascades, but rarely get it assigned.

If you get there before 4pm, you can check in, but they won't give you a room assignment or keys. They will, however, tell you what section you are in. We were told it was Fountains II. At 4pm or so, you go in a separate "key pick up" line and find out your unit number. At 2:30pm, I went to the key pick up line and ask if my room was ready yet. They said no, but if I was willing to move to Lakes they had a unit available right away. So we lucked out because at the time I had no idea which sections were considered better. So I would check again with the key pick up line if you don't get a good room assignment.

That being said, the shared amenities at the resort are great and young children friendly, with jungle gyms in a sand box type areas, surrey bikes available for rent, zero entry pools, a children shopping area in the Lakes activity center, and a ton of activies. Even the older units look better than a lot of gold crowns that I have been to in the past. Just don't expect getting a newer Marriott, though the Vistana Villages looks like it would be at the level.

Vistana is refurbishing all of the older units, in answer to the Silver Crown rating they recently received. I would ask to be in a newer unit, if I took Vistana as a trade. The pools are pretty great.

Orange Lake is a good option too, especially a three bedroom because they tend to be newer than some of the two bedrooms, so I think it would be a guarantee of a really nice unit. The new pool area sounds amazing, though the tube rentals are expensive and don't seem worth the price.

I have found the best inventory about five to 8 months ahead of our trips. I don't usually grab something this early, unless I see something really fabulous that I cannot resist, like a Hilton. :) Vistana Villages would be a top trade too.

Summer Bay 3 bedrooms are very nice and the main pool is great. Don't exchange into Summer Bay Villas because those units are not as nice.

Bonnett Creek

Susan,
Try Bonnett Creek. It's a Fairfield (oops, make that Wyndham) property that is as close to Disney without being a Disney timeshare and the pool area is great: lazy river, toddler play area, etc. It can be a tough trade thru RCI but worth a shot. It's still a young resort and new buildings are still being constructed around the lake so availability may be easier as those new units come online. Oh, and they have complimentary shuttle service to the Disney parks.

I still haven't seen a Bonnet Creek come up on RCI. Of course, I am only able to search with a blue week right now, as we have used all of our weeks with RCI. :bawl:

I've not heard any recent RCI reports, particularly now that wynfield owners can't choose a specific home-resort week to deposit. It appears that, for the moment, wynfield is meeting it's RCI developer-deposit obligations through depositing "lesser" resorts.

Jim,

My 2 children will be going to Orlando with my husband and myself the first week of August. I have been trying to get an entertainment book, but the website is down for the 2008 update. If you still have yours, I would gladly pay you shipping and whatever you want for the book.

Gosh, it makes me want to book something just because I can, unlike more popular areas with lesser supply, and nothing available! I'm so used to searching and not seeing anything decent. ;)
