OMG, the Manti Teo Hoax

I read that blog this morning. Sad. Really sad. Manti T'eo probably feels like a fool for being duped for so long.

On the other hand, maybe more girls will like him because he demonstrated such vulnerability.

I'm thinking at least on some level, Manti had to be in on it.

yeaaaa...

ill wait to hear the paul harvey version.

Take a look at all the public statements that Teo made concerning the girl friend. You'd have to be a fool to believe he wasn't in on it. Just one more story about another athlete taking advantage of a very gullible public.

Motive: Heisman votes.

If he was in on it, and is difficult to believe that he could have been hoaxed this elaborately, he is an idiot. And a sociopath.

Too many inconsistencies. Either way, Manti's got some serious 'splainin' to do.

I will admit this got a laugh when I saw it today on another college sports site.

There is some funny stuff coming out like Manti wasn't missing tackles during the NC game, he was just hugging his girlfriend. Or the SEC Real Football, Real Girlfriends picture.

I'm having a hard time understanding what the fuss is about.
But I could not care less about some college-kid's pretend-GF.

Kids that age are subject to a lot of peer pressure.
In on the hoax or not, now he's a laughing-stock. Sad, really.

This sounds like an elaborate episode of the mtv show Catfish. I do not understand how people get duped into believing an online virtual FB / phone relationship is real, but apparently, according to this 'reality' show, many kids nowadays do. So, I give him the benefit of doubt... He is the fool until he admits being the liar.

Pretty much how I feel. I'm really surprised how big this story has gotten. The only real impact, as I see it, is that if Teo comes across as being too far "out there" it may affect his draft stock. Other than that, who cares? I am actually less interested in this story than I am in the "shocking" :hysterical: revelation that Lance Armstrong doped, and that's saying something.

I don't know. I would much rather be known as the guy who outsmarted the media by coming up with a girlfriend hoax than to be known as the guy who fell for an online love scam. Pick your poison: Smart and conniving or Moron? I'd rather be the former, than the latter.

I believe that Manti Te'o actually fell in love with this online person and the inconsistencies are explained by Manti lying to everyone else about meeting her because nobody in their right mind would fall in love with someone they have never physically met in person. Manti lied for sure. About what, we don't know for sure.

All you have to do is look at the Heisman voting. It's a popularity contest and he had a legitimate shot at being the first defensive player to ever win the award. Instead the award went to the first ever freshman to win the award. Teo finished second, but he had a real shot at it. He obviously thought this would help him. What would be the harm in making this story up? Guess he has found out.

Reading the deadspin article, it is difficult to believe from the miscellaneous contradictions and inconsistencies that he was not complicit. If he made this up, he is a sociopath and utter piece of crap of a human being.

Not just kids although they're certainly much more comfortable with the online thing than earlier generations. I have a brother-in-law who began a coast-to-coast online relationship through a dating website. They communicated only online for a few months, then added in phone calls to supplement for a while (but still the majority was online as it was cheaper,) then they took turns flying out to visit each other for two weekends a month, then finally they were able to be work out their plans so that she relocated to Massachusetts from California. They're both in their 50's and have now been together in the traditional sense for over ten happy years.

No doubt there are crazies out there so you have to be very careful when you're involved in online communication, and the ridiculous MTV Catfish thing probably incites the crazies to take sick advantage more now than it's ever been done. I wouldn't put in the effort or take the risk for an online relationship but I can envision how one can develop over time - just consider how "personal" TUG is, how easily many of us communicate and sometimes share very personal tidbits of our lives. It's not too much of a stretch to say that we're forming very correct opinions of each others' personalities and compatibility.

I feel bad for Manti. It's possible this started very innocently with him not realizing the dupe, and then if/when he learned about it he probably tried a few things to make himself appear more savvy than he was.

One other scenario that is being thrown out is that Te'o is gay and created the whole girlfriend thing. If he were to come out and confess, with the rationale that societal pressure made him feel the need to create a girlfriend, I see this is the one and only way that society would give him a pass and actually turn a pathetic prank into a sympathetic indictment of our culture. Of course, if he were to do so, his supposed coming out of the closet could be a crock of sh#@ too.

I've heard the same. It would definitely explain a lot here. This will hopefully end when he makes his next public statement.

I never thought I would say this after the first day of this story, but based on this interview I actually think Manti may not have been involved with this hoax.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/

He certainly embellished and lied about certain aspects of the "relationship", but so have a lot of 21 and 22 year olds.

What a crazy story!

I believe Manti. Everything I know about that kid is positive. It is very easy for me to see how he could trust someone and then lie about seeing her to hide the fact that he had never really met her. He didn't want to deal with those who would tell him to be careful. Then, it spun out of control, it became a media circus and then Manti had to figure out how to make it right when he himself didn't even know the truth.

I really do think that this hoax effected his play in the national championship game. He played his worst game of the season on that day. Sad, truly sad.

Its a crazy story for sure. One funny comment that came out of this really had me laughing.

It was Jimmy Fallon who said something to the effect

"Nerds all over the world are really upset over this story because now even the imaginary girls go for the jocks"
