Back from Ocean Oak and wanted to share a few photos and thoughts.
Booking:
Ocean Oak seems to be one of the hardest resorts to book as a non-owner. Because of this, I booked at 9 months walking my reservation (thanks to the members of TUG of course) which was a first and found it very easy to do. I booked an Ocean Front room as I had plenty of saved points to burn and wanted something nice. No issues with availability when walking the reservation. I will say, it is a little nerve racking making sure the same room type is available the next day.
Travel:
We flew into Savannah due to the cost vs HHI. Very easy in and out with a rental car. Travel time to HHI was about about 90 minutes due to speed limits and traffic. While on I95 you can move, but once on 278 it was slow going. Speed limits vary from 40 MPH - 60MPH. Since we arrived on a Saturday, there were plenty of people going the same way. Since we had never been there, we just enjoyed the view and the drive.
Resort:
We arrived at the resort at about 2:30pm hoping our room would be ready. We were told they had a bottom level room ready, but if we wanted to be higher up we would have to wait an undisclosed amount of time. We waited as I did not book an OF to be on the bottom level. We walked around to acquaint ourselves with the resort and were notified about 3:15PM that our room was ready. Not too bad. We were assigned room 1508 which is in Building 1, 5th floor, room 8. This was an end unit which was awesome. There are 24 OF units and one is being used at the model so really only 23.
First impression of the room and the resort were very positive. Plenty of space and a great view.
Our view as we entered.
Once you enter, the second bedroom was immediately to the right with two double XL beds and an attached bath
Master bedroom/bath
View from balcony.
Our week was filled with relaxation and warmth. It was 100 plus each day until our last two days. The last two days were warm which is what the weather is normally like. Heard some locals/regulars say it was hotter than normal. The big pool was perfect with its temperature. There is a second pool that some say is an adult pool that was way too hot and contained kids. The ocean was about 88-89 degrees and the small pool was warmer so not refreshing to me. Needless to say, I stayed at the big pool.
With the ocean temperature that high, there were numerous signs about jelly fish. Numerous people were stung by jellyfish while I was there.
There is bistro and bar on site. Below is the menu.
Not sure if QR will work:
Parking was not really an issue as they have the overflow lot across the street. I had to park in the overflow lot once after returning to the resort after midnight and there were plenty of spaces. Otherwise parking was not an issue. The resort was busy especially the pool. There are not enough loungers for the amount of people. All loungers were reserved by 10am everyday. They did not enforce the CHOGS (chair hogs) and I saw numerous people reserve loungers and return several hours later. The gates were unlocked and I saw people from other properties using the pool. People were well behaved which was nice. No real noise at night due to most families having small children (would assume early to bed). I was told everybody staying at the resort were owners and they only have 124 units (4 used for sales) so no room for package people. When owners stay, I believe it is a more invested crowd.
Only two real grumbles. Bistro staff not the most friendly (not a bid deal) and the activities schedule. For activities, things only offered once. They had water aerobics with approximately 25-30 people show up to participate. I thought that was a good turnout and would think it would be well received if offered more. Other activities were fun, but only once. The rest of the staff was very friendly with smiles.
All in all a great relaxing week. Really enjoyed the peacefulness and laid back area. Another HGVC (Legacy Owner) resort I can check off my list.
