Hi everyone,

I'm taking my girls (ages 12 and 8) into the city tomorrow to see Mary Poppins. Does anyone have a fun recommendation for lunch? We won't go back to Ellen's as we witnessed some bad stuff there the last time we went. We've already been to Hard Rock many times, and Mars is too hokey (and the food is too bad). They are not into sports so wouldn't be into ESPN Zone.

Any other places to recommend?

Thanks in advance,

Sharon

We like this one

Angelo's 117 West 57th (the street where Hard Rock used to be). Excellent Italian and the best NY style pizza.

Give us the adresse of play

Give us the cross streets so we will know where you want to go.

Carnegi Deli is a NY institution and something that every visitor to NY ought to experience at least once (if you like that sort of thing). Its around 10 or so blocks from there, if I remember correctly. (And all three of you could probably get by on just one of their sandwiches!)

John's Pizzeria on 44th and 8th was recommended by Frommer's or Fodor's. We took the kids there a couple of years ago for a pre-Broadway dinner and they really liked it. Great pizza and good desserts.

Sharon,

We are heading to NYC in a few weeks (going to see Mary Poppins also) and want to go to Ellen's at some point during our stay. We were there last year and wanted to go but ran out of time. Recently, a boy in DD's class was talking to her about how much fun it was so now she is already asking to go there for dinner. Can I ask what you "bad stuff" you witnessed?

My daughter (11) loves Planet Hollywood. It's your basic tourist trap (over-priced mediocre food), but she just loves the excitement/energy of the place and it's a few blocks away from the Amsterdam Theatre.

My daughter (12 at the time) loved John's pizza, as well as Daniela's Trattoria -- both are near the theater. She also loved the atmosphere at Jekyl & Hyde (the food was just OK) but it's a bit further away, I think 6th Ave @ 57th.

Sharon, I'm curious. Where did you end up going, and how did the girls like it (and Mary Poppins)?

Thanks for asking!

We had parked on 40th and so set out for Planet Hollywood (on 44th or 45th I think), but ran into Hard Rock first and the girls were ready to stop and eat. So we went there, had a fabulous waiter (so much so that I called the manager over to pay the waiter a compliment) and good food (which I always find the Hard Rocks to have). We were right at 42nd street at that point so we were able to get to the theatre as the doors opened, giving us plenty of time to relax and buy the requisite t-shirts before the show.

My girls loved the show. I had already seen it in London with my son back in July, and for some reason I thought the show seemed a bit different in some parts (in the New York production, I think they toned down the special effects in the part where the father's old nanny comes back) so I think I liked the London production just a little better...although maybe that was just because seeing it for the first time was more magical. However, it was still an amazing show and one I would highly recommend!

I agree 100% with the Johns Pizza (on 44th & 8th) recommendation.

You can also try Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on 45th & Broadway or Virgil's BBQ on 43rd & Broadway (if you go there, you must try the hushpuppies).

I would also Tao's (most incredible pri-fixe lunch deal in Manhattan) or Bar Americain, but they are kinda upscale and I don't know if you kids would enjoy.

I work in the area, so as you can see I am pretty familiar with these places.

Enjoy

Joe
