NYC airport ground transport

that she thinks there might be a way to get to the Express A Train,
The Air train has 2 tracks. One stops in Howard Beach where you can catch the A train. The other stops at Jamaica station.

The Air Train has been running since 2003, so it has been an option for the last 23 years. If going to JFK from midtown, LIRR is my go-to because just about every LIRR stops at Jamaica except for one line, so there's always a train going to the Air Train.

I've grown up in NYC and lived here 50 years. Since the pandemic, the subway isn't as safe or reliable and more crowded. I prefer LIRR and express buses over the subway now, which is kind of sad since I've been taking it since high school.

The subway is far safer than it was 50 years ago

Many thanks for that information. The one time I flew into JFK the Airtrain was not yet in existence. Perhaps its pillars were already lined up along the Van Wyck but it was definitely not yet operational. And all I remembered at the time was my co-workers telling me how the subway took forever to get into Manhattan. And I already knew to avoid the Van Wyck while driving and I've obviously avoided it ever since. :)

Strange that you have that detailed information at your fingertips but an MTA customer service rep has no clue.

I'm surprised that the MTA rep couldn't provide this information! That's disappointing indeed.

Air Train option is great for solo travel. I've taken it many times but LGA is my preferred airport. I live 10 min from it.

I dunno. It was kind of fun to ride the subway at the time that they released the 1979 movie, The Warriors. :)

It became a far different city.

And since it's Super Bowl Sunday, I can make a Warriors reference. The Patriots coach has shown players clips from that movie (I guess to motivate them). And now you have players walking through the hallways clicking bottles yelling out, "Warriors. Come out to play-ay".

I totally agree about the Air Train from JFK. We have been using it for during the off-peak hours to get to both Manhattan and Long Island where we have family. It was a breeze when we took LIRR to the Air Train to make an evening flight. We have recently changed over to taking a taxi from the airport into Manhattan since we really despise hiking our luggage up and down the stairs to get to the upper east side.

The LGA reconstruction is beautiful. Nice, comfortable places to sit, lots of places to get a bite and the fountain with the music/water show keeps us entertained when arriving early for a flight.

Pretty sure the passes were just phased out with the Metrocard. The way it works now is you pay with an Omnicard, apple pay or a credit card and it caps out at around $35 per week but make sure you charge every ride with the same card.

I had not realized that they phased out the physical pass card, but the concept is still there provided you charge all your rides to the same card when you hit the max the rest are no additional charge.

The new payment system is called OMNY, and yes if you use the same card after a certain number of rides, you get a free ride

I take both the Amtrak and fly to Manhattan for work from the DC area, and I always try to figure out the fastest time from my house to my destination rather than trying for the cheapest flight or train. There are a few things that weren't mentioned yet that I personally think are important considerations. First of all, of the three airports, LGA is the closest to MVC by far in terms of time from the airport. As mentioned, JFK is a long and congested drive. Newark requires a trip through the Holland Tunnel and that means you have to go all the way across Manhattan from west to east. Also, Uber/Lyft are not right by the terminal at Newark or Laguardia meaning you have to walk a consideral distance to the pick up locations (I haven't been to JFK in a while so I can't comment on that). So for me it's Newark if I'm going to the west side (near the World Trade Center site) or LGA for anything east of Broadway. Newark to the Amtrak station is easy and inexpensive, but you would have to plan ahead to get the right train. If you've never been in the New York subway system, it's absolutely confusing and busy. I have co-workers who live in Manhattan and they have all of this transit stuff figured out, so it's second nature to them.

Thanks for your contribution to this thread, a thread that I've found to be far more interesting than I thought it would be. It's been a masterclass in good management technique as it's clearly proof that the best decisions are made after asking for everyone's input rather than one authoritarian boss making all his (or her) tunnelvision decisions.

Thanks for confirming above posts that LGA is "by far" the closest to Manhattan.

And that JFK "is a long and congested drive". Yet, it seems that the Airtrain link to the LIRR line (or the E train subway line if it gets you right to your destination) at Jamaica Station may make JFK a pretty good option. Assuming you're not buried in luggage and/or have six people in your party. :)

Taking a Newark cab may indeed necessitate a Holland Tunnel crossing. Or perhaps even a Lincoln Tunnel crossing which the GPS may "prefer" if its satellite indicates that the Holland is woefully congested and/or the Lincoln may provide an optimal route to one's midtown destination (like the Marriott Vacation Club). And the disadvantage of a Holland Tunnel crossing if you're going to Midtown is the distance south to north you have to travel, not necessarily west to east. You must be a Wall Street person.

Newark's own air train to the train that goes to Penn Station would likely work for the OP. The Marriott Vacation Club seems to be within walking distance, obviously depending on luggage and/or mobility capability.

If you happen to have a friend that can pick you up in Newark, I would recommend that you ask your friend to drive you to Boulevard East in Weehawken, Union City or West New York, New Jersey, just before you go through the Lincoln Tunnel. The view of Manhattan is world class.

But if you need to take a cab (in which case the cab driver may not allow any detours), you'll still see some nice "on the horizon" views of Manhattan.

But I did want to respond to your claim that the NYC subway system may be unfathomable to anyone that lives elsewhere. Not true. Just call the MTA and ask for a NYC city map to be mailed to you and you'll get the hang of it in no time.

As a NYC novice, and after reading all the posts, I am inclined to fly into LGA, take a cab to the MVC New York, and use Carmel for the return trip to the airport. We will be leaving from Chicago (O'Hare) so can pretty much choose the NYC airport we want. As far as local transportation options are concerned, I'm willing to pay more for the simpler option (cab). I appreciate the subway/train options... maybe next time!

A few extra details, this is a trip for 2, 3 nights to use up some points, at most one checked bag. We'll try to do a couple of days of Christmas stuff (Radio City and the Rockettes, Rockefeller Center) and other sites (Central Park, Chrysler building, etc.). I love the MVC location which is pretty central to what we want to do.

Thanks to all for the interesting and informative discussion!

I'm glad you found the option that will work best for you.

Another trip that may at some point work for you, especially if you like urban vacations, is Boston's Marriott Custom House. I wrote the most recent posted review.

Your comments about getting the collective knowledge to base such a decision was spot on! Thanks again for everyone's perspectives. I'll check out your Marriott Custom House review.

Also, Uber/Lyft are not right by the terminal at Newark...
At Terminals B & C Uber/Lyft pickup is curbside right outside the baggage claim doors.

At the new Terminal A (aka the worst new terminal in the US) it's a little further as the immediate curbside is reserved for civilians picking up passengers. But Uber/Lyft is the easiest way in and out of Terminal A because they put rental cars, parking, and the Airtrain in a separate building that you have to cross a couple of streets and a waterway to get to.
