So I get Marriott Titanium from MVC Presidential level right now. I thought one of the benefits is to get silver status from United. I’ve linked both memberships but I never received United silver so far. Just want to ask if you have received United status as promised? I’m about to book flight to Hawaii, United is the cheapest but I have to pay bag fees without status. I will stick to Southwest if United doesn’t honor the status match.

Yes, it took a few days after linking. Then I had to re-link next year and it took a few days again. Got a free bag and E+ seat at check in.

Lots of posts about this on other forums. Some people get it quickly, others don’t, some say customer service has told them the integration isn’t working automatically right now, etc. You should call Marriott.

Also, I’ve read this needs to get done every year… mine still shows United Silver and Marriott shows it’s still linked, but I just don’t know if that’s yet updated for 2024.

I’ve got it through the status match. Linked several years ago, and seems to auto renew each year without me doing anything. I get an email from MileagePlus in mid Feb each year welcoming me to Silver status for the next year.

I've had it for maybe 7 years now, never relinked it, carries forward every year.

Good to know; hope that's how mine works this year. But, that contradicts multiple posts in other forums.

I have also never re-linked and had United Silver status the last 3 years as a Marriott Titanium.

Same for my son. Have always renewed for him without doing anything.

Mine has never renewed and I have to call United and/or Marriott every year. If United Silver is going to drop off it usually happens the first week in February.

Did you just call the normal Marriott customer number? Or any specific department you have to reach out?

It's carried forward for me, but I've kept the Marriott titanium status every year. It might drop off if your status at Marriott changes, then need to be re-linked when you go back up to titanium.

Not sure how to relink, Marriott says I already linked with United. I will give a call to Marriott to figure out. I want to book United since they are the cheapest and time is the best. United can save us $200 per person from Southwest. I need United silver status just to get free bag, but afraid ending up with basic economy class that can't even allow carry on.

And with United Silver, if you check in right at the 24-hour mark, you can grab an Economy Premium seat if available.

After many calls to both United and Marriott someone at United finally went the extra mile for me and resolved it. I don't know what the issue was. We'll see what happens this year.

The big perk of United Silver for us is the extra award availability and lower miles costs for award flights. You can also get this if you have their branded credit card. Until I got Marriott Titanium this was an issue with a bunch of miles I had in my United account. My wife could see so much more as she had the branded card and I didn't. It doesn't matter now unless I end up losing Titanium which I just got in under the wire this year.

I have United Silver (not through Marriott) and so far I am not seeing much advantage. The advantages I get with United are through my credit card. I get one free checked bag and passes to the United lounges. I've never gotten an upgrade to E+ as usually they are all sold old by the time I check in. If I'm getting lower miles cost for award flights I guess that's something I just never noticed.

Silver also gets a free bag in Economy. As for the added award availability, you don't really notice it unless you are checking flights under accounts with and without. In both these cases, having the credit card is as good as having Silver.

mine has not relinked for the past four years.

Just haven’t wanted to spend the time in finding the way to get this corrected since I have Star Alliance Gold which gives me free bags.

United Silver also gets your free checked bag 70 lbs. on United metal instead of 50 lbs.

Personally I would not want to be hauling around a 70 pound suitcase. o_O

Of course not. But when I'm on a long trip it's not uncommon for mine to be 55 lbs on the return flight. It's nice not to worry about it, as I have done so many times in the past. I consider this benefit to be valuable if only for the peace of mind.

It could come in handy if you are just a pound or two over 50. This can happen easily with the large cases.

Even the low cost airlines in Europe allow up to 32Kg (~70 Pounds) chargeable.
We only take a relatively small soft sided bag with their lower limit of 23Kg, but even that is just over 50 Pounds.

I was booking a United flight today, but my Silver level wasn't showing. Price for the flight had dropped today and there wasn't many seats left. I called the United Mileageplus number and after about 30-40 minutes on the phone the United rep was able to change my status back to Silver. She was going to put in a request to back office that was going to take 2-3 days, but when I explained I needed to make a reservation, she took control and called Marriott to confirm I was really Titanium and then was able to get my status changed while I was still on the phone. All she could tell me was that my premier status was only good for a year, but couldn't say why the linkage didn't renew automatically. Marriott page indicated I was already linked. Bottom line without having TUG and seeing this thread I wouldn't have known what was going on. Thanks TUG!
