So, just finished paying the last of the MFs the other day and got back the CAD cost of each after exchange, currency conversion, etc.

Our units averaged an increase in MFs of 3.2%, which isn't that bad. However, after taking in to account the currency fluctuations since last year, the bottom line to us was an increase of 24% since last year.

I'm curious how other non-US owners are handling the currency fluctuations.

Are you paying the MFs in installments in advance over the year and averaging out the ups-and-downs?

Are you buying USD over the year and paying the MFs at the end of the year using that (effectively the same as averaging I guess)?

Are you getting paid in USD in some way, so you just don't care?

Are you doing something else I haven't thought of?

Buying US $ over the course of the year and averaging is a good strategy. You could also obtain a line of credit at a US bank and wait for opportunities to buy $ and pay down the line of credit. You could also invest in US $ securities that pay dividends or interest and hedge the currency exposure.

Buying dollars month to month is the same as paying 1/12 MF monthly.
Do that with a 0 FTF card and over time you will do averagely.

Right now we are taking the hit. It sucks because our dollar is so low but we knew going into it that this could happen.

Paying on my credit card that gives points is a great way to recoup some loss. There are several good travel cards that quickly add up to a free ticket in points. The RBC Avion is great. Also Westjet has a fantastic card that gives a lot of perks and ticket $$.
