I know that a lot of folks are disappointed with the quality of trades within the Marriott system that they have been able to make since the start of the points program, but what about trades outside of Marriott? Can you still make good trades to other locations? Are Marriott properties powerful traders within II? Do many people make outside trades or do you mostly stay within the Marriott system? What are some of the better places to trade to outside of the system?

Thanks
Doug

I've only traded twice - once into Club Casa Dorada in San Jose Del Cabo. It was a beautiful resort and it came through quickly. The second time I requested both Marriott and non - Marriotts and the Marriott came thru first. I own 2 Plat Plus fixed weeks, however, that are non-lock-offs. It is more beneficial for me to rent them and then rent where I want to go. I usually come out cash ahead. I also suspect I'd be better off converting to points, reserving a week and then trading for what I want rather than giving up a full 2 or 3 bedroom high-value week for a lower demand week.

Traded into Westgate Smokey Mountain Village ( Gatlinburg, TN) and Tahiti Village (Las Vegas) twice. Also did Vistiana (Orlando), Sunset (Alberta Canada) and Mesquite NV. All were listed as I I Premier properties. Some were not quite up to the Marriott standard but all were excellent stays. While I prefer Marriott to Marriott trades, I think that there are plenty of nice properties that are not Marriotts. There's sometimes a shortage at some resorts but they seem to trade similar to the Marriott seasons.

Some resorts are actually better quality than Marriotts. Four Seasons Aviara and Four Seasons Scottsdale are both superior to Marriott resorts. They are truly luxury class with huge villas, gorgeous furnishings, daily maid service, and additional amenities and services that set them apart.

In addition, some of the Hyatt resorts are higher quality than Marriotts. Westins are probably equal to or better than Marriotts as well.

It's possible to trade into some very fine resorts through II if you are flexible about the time of the year. It is hard to get peak season at most of the hotel-based timeshare systems, but other times of the year are quite attainable.

I had a couple Gift-of-time weeks that I traded after points started. Traded both for August weeks. Got a WKORVN week with one (Maui-Westin) for 2011 and a Waiohai week with the other (Kauai) for 2012. Trading seems fine for me.

Within the past 6 months I've made two non-Marriott trades on-line at II. I was able to trade a Shadow Ridge Platinum L/O for a 3000 sq. ft. Master suite at Grand Luxxe-Playa del Carmen which was fabulous. In late April/early May we will be staying at the Westin Kierland/Scottsdale in a full 2 bedroom villa secured with a DSVII/white season lock off. I've not been disapointed with these two non-Marriott trades to date. I also love the fact that I've been able to maximize my ownership value with the lock off units.

Traded to hyatt

I've been thrilled to trade a Gold studio Grande Vista into a two bedroom Hyatt Main Street Station. We've done this twice for thanksgiving.

In the 5 years we've been trading our Marriott properties, we've only gotten one Marriott trade (into Grande Chateau in Vegas). Of all the other trades (pushing 10), we've never been disappointed. Right now, I'm in the dining room looking out at the Carribean from The Grand Caymanian Resort. AWESOME room: ground floor end unit that we can walk right onto the beach from.

Like I've said before, Marriott is a great operator, but not the only one.

Will post more about the resort later.
