Just a couple quick questions regarding NCV day usage and a gold week.

My wife and I live about two hours north of NCV and are contemplating a couple things. First, what are the rules regarding day usage. Can you use it anytime during the season, or just during the season you own? Also, what if you own every year or every other year?

I have my Ko Olina week enrolled in the DC and am also a Starwood owner. I've come up with a few scenarios and would like to get some feedback from the experts of TUG.

Scenario 1- Trade my one bedroom SVV Bella lockoff for Newport Coast in gold season? I know I wouldn't get priority due to it being Starwood, but is this a reasonable request to trade for a gold season week (April through June)?

Scenario 2- Convert my Ko Olina week to DC points, spend six days in Ko Olina low season, use the rest of the points for Newport Coast for five or six days.

Scenario 3- Use my 1BR Ko Olina as I always have, try trading my studio unit into Newport Coast during gold season.

Scenario 4- Buy Newport Coast annual week on resale market. Gold season is ideal for us, but the day usage rules could be a deal breaker for me.

I look forward to your insight and feedback.

Regards,
James

(1) Unlikely scenario unless in Flexchange. While a few gold weeks may fall to II, the number is so small that you would be competing against other units. While SPG trading value is strong, there will likely be a larger unit that will snap it up before you.

(2) Don't know -- I'll leave this for someone who owns in DC

(3) Slight possibility. Although I would say that studio units are underwhelming as far as trades, II sometimes throws a curveball where the studio week will trade into a much larger unit. However, most times a trade up from a studio to a 2BR is tough, and generally I see it during flex or instant exchange for Marriott to Marriott.

(4) Sure, assuming the day use rules work for you.

I'd say (4) is your best bet, followed by (2), (3), and (1). The difference between (4) and (2) is that (4) will require an additional capital outlay. It would depend upon how much the day use and increased reliability of getting a reservation would be worth.

By the way, I like the avatar. I used to work at the Pearlridge location many moons ago.

Scenario (1) I have used 1 BR SDO to trade into NCV twice, late Dec and mid-Apr and not during Flexchange. They were both easy trades but obviously SDO does not have Marriott priority. SVV may have slightly lower trading power compared with SDO.

Scenario (2) No knowledge - can't comment on that.

Scenario (3) Using studio is touch and go. My own experience here... In Sept 2013 I had put in a DSV studio to request for NCV for April 2015. There were many sightings of NCV in II for the past couple of months for April 2015. I did not cancel my ongoing request but went ahead and put in a 1BR DSV for April 2015 after reading the sightings. The 1BR DSV got an exchange to NCV the same night I put in the request. II periodically had been calling me about my ongoing request for my studio and I received one of those calls a couple of days after the 1BR DSV got traded into NCV. The II rep asked if I wished to trade into something else as there was no NCV available and obviously I knew NCV was available during those few weeks but the studio just did not have enough trade power. I declined and said I would think about adding a different resort to the request. A couple of weeks passed and surprisingly I got a notification from II in email that my studio was exchanged into NCV for the same week (April 2015) that my 1BR DSV had exchanged into. I think either that week slipped through the cracks in the automated system or some agent just manually exchanged that week. Now I am sitting on two April 2015 NCV weeks when I only needed one. Not a bad problem to have, I guess.

Scenario (4) No knowledge - can't comment on that

It seems that fairly far out (6-12 months anyway) you need a 1BR unit to trade in to NCV. At least that was our experience a few years ago even when trying to trade in to NCV in February. When you get closer to travel dates, then using a studio may be possible. The same goes for most any Marriott 2BR, except perhaps several Florida properties.

I own here and have utilized the day usage several times. You have to call the resort directly to see if there are "availability" for the day and give your owner number to reserve. You can request anytime, outside of your given week. I've been declined only twice and that was because I was asking for a holiday weekend. I believe there is also limit on how many day usage per year you can request for but not sure what the limit is. Once you arrive, check in at the front desk and you are given wrist bands, pool access cards, and 1 parking pass for the day.

One thing to keep in mind is that the views at Newport Coast can vary greatly by villa assignment. There are spectacular views from some villas, but parking lot or tree views from others. Therefore, the Marriott ownership status can improve your possibilities for being assigned a villa with a coastal/ ocean view. Options 4 and 2 will provide your best view priorities.

I personally believe that Marriott trades into NCV are harder than a few years ago. There seems to be less inventory to trade in II.

Same can be said for other properties like KAA, KAN which used to have bulk deposits that far surpassed Starwood priority in off season. Now rarely do I see weeks available.

Honestly, the trading game can be very difficult and time consuming. I recommend buying where you want to stay.

We've traded our two Canyon Villas studios into NCV every year now for many years. I was starting to become concerned that it might become more difficult to make these trades once the DC program ramped up, but so far I haven't seen any difference. This year we were confirmed into two weeks in early 2015 (one in January and one in February) by the third week of February 2014, which was within 3 or 4 weeks of making the exchange requests.

I agree. Trading into NCV still is fairly easy. NOT as easy as in the years past but still.

I also agree that as a NCV owner we get great room assignments even when we trade in using non marriott weeks. Not sure I'd like NCV as much with the poor room views.

NCV no longer provides guest passes to owners during peak season (summer). You need a reservation or be added as a guest to an existing reservation in order to use their facilities.

Interesting, but not surprising. Resorts need to prevent crowding at the facilities or it isn't enjoyable for anyone.
