When you purchase a Marriott TS you are always, always assigned a specific week # and unit # on your deed. The week # is usually not a fixed week. It is assigned for inventory control purposes only. The week # you own is then assigned to a certain season. The most # of seasons a marriott will have is 5 (Platinum Plus, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze). These seasons equate to the most popular seasons at a resort. For example a platinum week at a Beach resort in Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach would be in the summer months while Jan and Feb would probably be bronze weeks. The exact opposite would be true in Frenchman's Cove in St. Thomas. Jan and Feb would be platinum while the middle of summer would probably be bronze weeks. Now to further confuse you the platinum plus weeks is a relatively new development and is usually only found at the newer resorts. For example there is no such a thing at Barony Beach and Grand Ocean. A Platinum Plus week is a fixed week. For example the week of July 4th at the Marriott in Myrtle Beach is a platinum plus week and if you purchased that your week would be the week that contained the July 4th holiday each year. However, this is a relatively new thing and so not really important to this discussion. Most of the Marriott's have 4 seasons (platinum, gold, silver and bronze). A few have less than 4 perhaps deleting the bronze designation completely. The week you purchase falls within a season and you can vacation within that season making your reservation a year in advance for the specific week you want.
So if you are purchasing resale you absolutely need to know what week # is on the owner's deed. You then need to verify that week falls within the season that you want to vacation in. Calenders showing which weeks fall within each season are on the Marriott Vacation Club web site for each resort but I think you have to be a owner to see these.
The other thing to take into consideration when purchasing besides the season is the view you are purchasing. Not all Marriott's have a view price differential but a lot do including all the beach resorts. View designations vary from resort to resort but they usually include ocean front, oceanside, oceanview and garden view. Not all resorts have all these designations depending upon the resort lay out. For example there is no garden view at Grand Ocean but there is at Barony Beach. This is where your unit # comes into play. You need to know what the unit # is if there are price differences based on the view so you can be assured that the unit # you are purchasing has the view you want.
I find that the easiest way to confirm this information is simply to call the resort directly and ask them what the view designation unit # xxxx has. They can easily tell you
So to summarize the week # you buy designates the season you are purchasing in and the unit # desiginates the view you are buying if the resort has different view designation
