New to club Wyndham

I guess the sales lady lied to me
She told me my 486000 points would recieve 15% bonus and an automatic unit upgrade if i upgraded to vip
No she did not lie to you but she played you. 486,000 will get you a 15% discount. But that is 14,000 short of the 500,000 needed for the 25% discount. So the next time you go they will pressure you to go up to the next level. So why not buy the 500,000 now and instead of purchasing again. They keep you just short of the next level so you keep buying.

You will get an automatic upgraded if a larger room is available within 15 days of check in. But note the higher VIP levels get that automatic upgrade within 60 days of check in.

The 500,00 will get you a one month before check in for the automatic upgrade

I dont have any vip points. Now i remember she told me 25%. The problem is its not true because my 486k wont qualify because they arent from developer

No, it won’t, because they’re resale. And Wyndham will not make them all VIP-eligible with a purchase. The salesperson lied.

yes to get VIP, all 486,000 have to be bought from Wyndham

you are correct. I read it wrong. I thought they were trying to sell him a 486,000 package

Ignore what I posted. I read it as they had sold you a 486,000 package to get you VIP.

Understand I read it wrong thinking they were trying to sell you a package to get you to VIP. But for others thinking about buying VIP, I am correct about how they play games. They have you buy a VIP package at one level and leave you just short have enough points for a higher VIP level. That way they can talk you into going back and buying again to reach that higher level. That way they can sell you more points than you need to get to that higher level.

I am guessing she was going to sell me a bunch of points to reach vip and told me my 486k would get a 25% bonus and upgrades
However, i am assuming the manager set her straight because he came to our table without showing us any prices and concluded the presentation.

@RENTER, afaik the system will allow you to purchase points protection but unless it's changed the terms and conditions state it doesn't cover when a guest name is added to the reservation. However if the guest cancelled and you changed the reservation back to your name then the reservation might be covered? Depending on how close it was to the check in date you might have to call in to get your name put back on the reservation. I suspect that would work a time or two and then they'd flag your account. Not sure if you want to or care about drawing that kind of attention to yourself.

@jasavk, how sales hooks you is to give you bonus points that are good for two years. Those bonus points allow you to experience a VIP level or a higher VIP level for two years. They count on you not wanting to give that up when the time is up. There's also usually a price lock for a year, maybe it's two years, as an additional incentive to keep those VIP benefits.

That is not what I was doing. In fact, on my postings approved by Wyndham, I had offered the points protection as an option and they had no complaints. But since it seems I have opened a can of worms and brought attention to this issue, I am no longer offering it and have removed this option from my postings. I will use less expensive options. Why Wyndham was allowing it when it was prohibited, I do not know. Maybe they enjoyed the thousands I paid them each year and were using that money to pay for those bragging how they took Wyndham's gifts and then walked out and bought resale and only fools bought from Wyndham.

If you aren't booking your stays with the 25% silver VIP discount at 60 days or less and hopefully getting the upgrade on the unit size at 30 days or less for silver, your points probably aren't going to go as far as you're thinking they will. That's almost always the case with new owners.

As someone else pointed out, keep watching the website for the Owner Deals. You can sometimes get more than 25% off.

At this time the automatic upgrades you can get at a later date either aren't working at all or not working very often. Even if and when Wyndham's sub par IT team ever gets them working again, if you have a reservation keep watching the availability. Many of us find a smaller unit that we can upgrade to larger unit at the time of booking. Then we go back and cancel our original reservation. A word of warning, don't cancel your original reservation until you've secured another reservation. The website is often plagued with ghost inventory. Ghost inventory shows as available but when you try to book it you find out it isn't available.

There's a reason the parking pass/room key/wristband people pressure owners so hard to go to an update. I believe it was @HitchHiker71 who posted that Wyndham's sales metrics show that people who are already owners buy more often than people who aren't already owners.

Some people are bosses about being able to say "No!" in a way that ends it right there. Too many times owners find themselves caving, getting upset or angry when the person won't take no for an answer. Here's a couple of suggestions. Tell them that as of now your time is fully scheduled but if something changes you'll get back to them. Or try the good spouse/bad spouse approach. Tell them my wife/husband absolutely refuses to go and have the "difficult" spouse step back so Wyndham person can't engage them. Another good one is telling them you're a TUG member so if there's anything worth knowing you'll find out about it on TUG.
I'm brand new to this forum but @Jan M. this is the best club wyndham advice I've seen on here so far

Im pretty new to this
I bought 486,000 wyndham points on a resale
They are deeded to Canterbury in ,SF CA.. Is it worth it to upgrade to VIP ? What is the best way? If I add 100k points will all 586k be VIP? Thanks ,James
Silver lining is you'll have good access to Canterbury availability since those 486k points are deeded there and I think it's the single best property of all the wyndham resorts. The presidential units, in particular, at Canterbury are bigger and nicer than anywhere I've ever stayed period. And I love San Francisco.

@jasavak, Canterbury is one of the resorts with the lowest maintenance fees. Did you do your research beforehand and specifically look for something with low maintenance fees or was it just dumb luck?

I was renting Wyndham Pagosa weeks from Ebay for about $500-$700 every summer until the guy stopped , probably due to changes with Wyndham. Later other rents were posted for $1,000+ So , I started searching for Wyndham points in order to keep the costs down. I found the Canterbury matched my needs.

One last thing, are owner updates required?
They are not required, but if you recognize that you can insist that they end after 60 minutes, sometimes it is worth going if only to get a gift card (some locations provide breakfast). When my wife was traveling every other week and using Wyndham points instead of renting a hotel room, an 8am presentation before she headed to the office at 10am was worth sitting through because she would use it to stock up on groceries later that evening. As long as it was at least 15 days between presentations, the concierge would get credit for booking a new presentation. Eventually, my wife ran through pretty much all of the sales reps at that location. She told them that she didn't want to waste their time if there was someone else who was potentially interested in purchasing, so sometimes the "owner update" was less than 30 minutes.

I had kinda figured this information out, but this is good info. I’ll note that on our last stay in Branson they offered us the owners update, and we declined since we were only there a couple of days for a weekend getaway. The host was very understanding and the issue was dropped.

My wife however went to ask someone at the restaurant we had eaten at for directions to something while I was paying the bill and it was a timeshare host for some other company……. Man they were offering a 600 dollar visa gift card and free show tickets for my entire family to tour their resort and the opportunity to buy out our Wyndham contract, what ever that means. And it was kinda high pressure. I was as kind as I could be at declining as tempting as the gift card was but it wasn’t worth wasting what would have amounted to likely a whole day for it.

My wife says to me when we finally got out of there “I’m never asking anyone anything again” lol.

I am the same way. I also use my points or rent from other owners for my business trips. So, I go often and face the same situation. Except at one point it was less then 15 days. It was every 3 days.

I also did not want to waste a salespersons time if I was not going to buy. I get no thrill putting one over on Wyndham by taking their gift and not buying.

I learned the appointment setters were working on a quota system and that is the only reason I agreed to attend. But at the first one, I talked to the sales manager and asked her do you really want me here when I am not going to buy, I did not want to waste their time regardless of a free gift.

She thanked me for thinking of them and told me it was ok because of the pressure the appointment setters were on. So, from them on, they just had me show up and show them my driver's license to get the gift card. I then used the gift card to buy beer and wine to share with everyone after they were off work.
