New Shortwave Radio Broadcast

Jeff, have you thought of becoming an Amateur Radio operator? I know that you may be limited space-wise, but I suspect that a set-up with a mobile whip antenna (intended for use on a car) might work well enough. There are a lot of people who value talking to someone in Hawaii. Also, there are a bunch of digital modes that work with low signal-to-noise ratios.

There is no longer a code requirement and the tests for technician and general are pretty easy. Plus, there are a number of on-line sample tests to help you prepare.

I recently moved from my location on the top of a hill with a 56 foot tower and a 1 KW amplifier to a small unit in a retirement community. I'm planning on putting a 2 meter and 10 meter antenna in the attic. (a 2 meter 1/4 wave vertical is only about 18 inches tall and a 10 meter 1/4 wave is only about 8 feet tall. Antennas for automobiles have loading coils and are even shorter).

I think that you might really enjoy amateur radio. PM me if you'd like.

Aloha, yes, I still may do that. I would have to look on where I could take the test. It would be a pain to travel from Molokai.

I decided to start with this Shortwave broadcast and I must admit that it has been well received.

Thank you and yes, I will contact you when I decide to move forward with that.🤙🏻

The FCC has made a provision for Volunteer Examiners. These are "hams" that have an Extra Class (highest) license. They will administer the test. I did this to get my own Extra Class license. If there is a radio club on Molokai and/or if you do a google search you may find a VE locally. If there isn't a radio club on Molokai, perhaps a neighboring island, like Maui, might have some ideas that would work for you.

Another "brainstorm" is that perhaps a VE on Maui (which has a many ham operators and VE's) is to administer the VE exam via Zoom, Skype or equivalent.

I'm sure it would have to be Maui or Oahu.

The new computer is so much nicer and makes things go so much faster. It's going so well, I am going to do a couple segments for the June broadcast so I'm not rushed from when we return from our Kauai trip.🤙🏻
