I'm considering exchanging into The Quarter House resort in the French Quarter. From all reports, the place is very nice, convenient, and in good shape. I'm wondering what other TUGgers think of the place. Resort reviews are great, but after Katrina, I'm a little hesitant. Anyone have first-hand knowledge to share? Is an exchange to the French Quarter worthwhile, as the city rebuilds?

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,
I stayed in a two bedroom at the Quarter House during Thanksgiving 2006. I thought the resort had so much character and was very convenient. The condo was HUGE. We rented a car and I do remember the parking offered by the resort to be a bit of a hassle so we used on street parking. And that is a bit tricky as well if I remember, some places were available at night only. And certain streets became one way on weekend nights. We found the locals to be incredibly positive and helpful even though they had been through a terrible disaster. That was my first visit to the city so I don't know what it was like before Katrina, but I found it to be a place I would certainly visit again.

Hope this helps.

Cindy

Thanks, Cindy. It helps a lot. Since posting this, I've received a few PMs from others that have also been favorable. So it looks like we'll be heading to the Big Easy next year. Cool! ;)

Go! Especially go any time you can stay in the French Quarter!

We went in October 2006 (18 months after Katrina). We stayed at The Quarter House. We had such a great time we are heading back there again in March 2008. Again to The Quarter House. Why? Great location and great staff at this resort.

I encourage you also to go now so you can observe the reconstruction first-hand. See it for your self and know what's real versus what's on the news.

Well, that settles it. Thanks, everyone. We're now confirmed into a 2BR unit at the Quarter House in May 2009. Yippee skippy!

Well this may change everything! MAY! This can be a HOT month in NOLA! Especially when compared to the Pacific NW. But you might need the heat to dry out too!

I've seen lots of headlines this week about all the people moving into NOLA again. By May 2009, NOLA will be fully recovered from Katrina!

But you might need the heat to dry out too!

Not in New Orleans. Walking through NOLA in the summer is like swimming through a pot of boiling gumbo. Smells pretty interesting, but extremely hot and humid. No drying out there. . . .

No problem. We'll be stopping in New Orleans on our way back West after spending a week at Orange Lake River Island in Orlando. I remember the humidity in both cities, so am prepared for it.

And let's face it: After we get back home, snuggled way up next to the British Columbia border as we are, freezing our bojangles off, we'll soon be hankerin' for another trip down that way, I'm sure. LOL! :hysterical:

typical urban America

I have not been to the Quarter House, but I have been to NO since Katrina. We stayed at Loew's Hotel for a conference. The people there are charming, but it's sad how the 9th Ward has still not been rebuilt yet. We took a Katrina tour, and it's shocking how we spend billions of money in Iraq, but can't spend that much money to rebuild our own cities.

Anyway, be careful of some of the folks who try to trick you of your money in the French Quarter. One of the folks in our party got his shoes "shined" with a dirty hankerchief and a bottle of hotel lotion. :annoyed: He gave the guy $10 to go away, but I wouldn't have paid him at all. Typical of big cities, so if you're from an urban city, this stuff doesn't phase you, but small-town residents who are more trusting might want to keep their guards up. It's like driving around in Los Angeles, when you come off the freeway, a homeless guy trying to wipe off your windshield for a buck.

I spent 20 years in the Navy, and have literally traveled around the world. I've been conned, scammed, flim-flammed, cheated, flummoxed, bamboozled, double-crossed, two-timed, and ripped off wth the best of 'em. I'm a lot wiser these days, and a lot less trusting. Not to worry, but thanks for the warning. :)

Dave,

Don't forget to add two more to your great list -

Stung (from the movie "The Sting")

Grifted (as from the movie "The Grifters")

You'll have a great time in New Orleans at the Quarter House. We spent a week there in June '07 - Great location in the French Quarter. The FQ was largely undamaged by Katrina.

Have a great trip

Richard

beginning of Mardi Gras parades

You should be fine in NOLA. We just got back. We were at yet another conference in New Orleans, from 1/24-1/27. It was raining, but Mardi Gras parades started anyway. I had never been to Mardi Gras, although we left before it really picked up. I heard the hotels were booked out to more capacity than last year. There were some decent crowds along Canal Street, but I didn't see a lot of people further up the St. Charles parade route. I suspect that the French Quarter gets crazy around the weekend before Mardi Gras. There were already some drunken fools on the streets before we left and came back home. Be careful of flying beads being hurled at your face from a float! One lady was icing her cheek. She had a huge purple bruise--from Mardi Gras beads being flung at her face. It's very dangerous when they're not lobbed in the air, and some of them are very heavy!
