New name for Big Island

Maui: island where your sandals fell apart in the lobby

That's funny. My ABC flip flops fell apart near an ABC store. Since they were only a day old I tried to return them but because of the hassle just ended up buying another pair.

Bill

The Hawaiian name for the Big Island is Moku o Keawe.
:thumbup:shaka
"Hawai`i nui o Keawe or Moku o Keawe is a name used by Native Hawaiians for the largest island of Hawai`i. Keaweikekahiali`iokamoku, a chief of the 17th century, was known for peace and prosperity during his reign."

I doubt it will happen and if they do try there will be a lot of local input which will probably stall anything from happening.

When we lived in Kona we always referred to it as Island of Hawaii or Hawaii Island out of cultural respect and never Big Island which is basically a haole nickname.

I thought the same and it kind of is already call Hawai'i and Big Island unofficially. In the news report they are saying they need an official name to use for documents.

Bill
They don't need a different official name for documents. In legal documents, the Big Island is described as "State and County of Hawaii."

To me it's always going to be Big Island, lol.

The next thing the Hawaiian politicians might discuss is the official pronunciation of Hawai'i, joking here. But I say Ha-why-e like it's one word. I have relatives that say HA-vye-e-e like it's three words. I hear it both ways in the news.

Bill

Pretty much everyone who lives in Hawaii just says it the way you do. A little less "y" in the why part. A few people say it the with a V for the why. No one says it in 4 parts like the second way you described, but I suspect that was a typo.

Not a typo. I was going for something like Huh-vuh-ee---ee or Ha-vie-ee---ee with a pause between the ee---ee.
