NEW Inter-Island Airline Flying today

On the news was the first day of operation for Mokulele Airlines, a new inter-island airline with new jets, Embraer E170's. The airline has 4 planes operating with two more slated to be ordered in coming weeks provided business is there.

They've opened with $45 fares which reported the other carriers on the island are matching. Also good news, most of the employees of the new airline are ex-Aloha workers who have a stellar reputation on the island.

Actually this airline's been around for about 10 years. I flew them in 2000 for a circle island tour on the Big Island. I believe they've always had some limited interisland flights but it sounds like they've expanded with the shutdown of others.

Mokulele Airlines partnered with Republic Air for a few inter-island routes. They do have plans for servicing all of the islands in the near future as Republic provides more aircraft.

The good news is that prices have become more reasonable again for the remaining inter-island carriers.
