Is there a timeshare (trading via RCI) in a nice town/village where we could enjoy a winter week without needing to drive? We don't ski so don't need to be near slopes. Would like to spend our time relaxing, dining, sitting by a fire reading, taking walks around town or nearby trails. Does such a place exist??

Suggest Boston....Custom House..take the "T" or great walking city...
another location without a car is Newport RI..(has several Wyndham Resorts). Newport has wonderful local public transportation hub available in town at the Visitor Center...you could travel to Providence for the day or Boston. Newport is a great small town to visit by foot...some TS even have fireplaces in the unit to read those books fireside.

I also think Newport's the answer.
Not all the properties are what I'd call "downtown."
Your best choices without a car are:
Newport Bay Club
America's Cup Inn
The Wellington
Wyndham at Long Wharf

I agree with rklein001's suggestion of Newport. Newport center is easy to walk and there are a number of good restaurants. If you are looking for a quiet timeshare, I would recommend the Wellington which is located at the south end of Thames St., away from the hustle and bustle of Newport center; but still an easy walk to the center. The unit includes a fireplace but do not have full kitchens. I do not know who the Wellington is affiliated with,

You could fly into TF Green State Airport located in Warwick RI which is on the west side of Narragansett Bay, about 28 miles from Newport.

One thing I have to add is that Newport in the winter can be very cold when the wind is off the harbor. The times I have visited Newport in the winter that cold wind cut right through my normal winter coat, brrrrrrrrrr.

If you are only interested in relaxing, Newport is the place to be; but Boston has much, much more to offer.

seamist resort...

What about Sea Mist in Mashpee ?? Its a short walk to restaurants and to the Mashpee Common area.... or Harbor HIll in Pt own ? But, I think alot of businesses may be closed... so I dont know bout that one....what about HIllcrest Condos in Ogunquit Maine ??? Thats not too far from the town but again, alot may be closed for the winter months.. Boston is prob. the best best....or something in the White Mtns near town ??? There is a place in Wilmington VT , cant remember name off hand but that is in town.. Stowe might also have a few ??? Take a peek... just suggestions.

I live 30-40 minutes from Newport and 60 from Boston where there is a lot to do and to great walking around areas. Newport-other than the beach and the Newport mansions that's about it. You'll still need a car to get to whatever destination you decide even if you just want to relax. It's extra cold near the ocean so you need layers.

trapp family lodge in stowe, though i don't know how you'd get there...

Previous poster referred to Wilmington VT; the Craft's Inn is right in that town and it's a decent place not far from Mt Snow. Eastern Slopes Inn is in North Conway NH, quaint small town with shops and restaurants. But I think the best place is Stowe VT (NOT in the mountains!) in the town itself and I believe that the Village Green is right in town near many shops, historic district and great restaurants. You can certainly do lots of walking in Stowe.
And I'd say this area is more upscale than other ski towns in New England.

new england no car

Yes, the Crafts INn....in Wilmington.... Stowe is a great new england village, one of my faves so that would be a good choice but getting there without a car I am not sure !!!!Buses and trains are not exactly plentiful.... another place to consider visiting is Manchester VT but no ts around... lots of great B&B's though,... Kennebunkport ME is a nice walking village too but again , no TS.... good luck !!!

I also recommend Newport. Nice shops, good eats, take a tour of a mansion if you want. There are buses from the Providence Airport to the island. Once there, the public transit system runs a small trolley around town if you don't want to walk. Alternately, there are some timeshares across the Bay in Jamestown as well that you could probably trade into. I have not been there so I can't tell you what the town is like.

The Wyndham timeshares are in RCI and are located on Thames Street. I think the Newport Bay Club is II.

Abbekit, I looked at your timeshare photos. Did you stay in any of these resorts without a car? We are going to New Mexico next October and I thank you for posting the photos of the resorts you stayed at there.

I was curious about getting around without a car in the Northeast since we might consider going in winter and being from Texas we aren't crazy about trying to drive in snowy conditions.

We usually rent a car except for a few timeshares in Europe where we could get around by train or bus easily (Dublin and Switzerland).

Since we live in Texas we have driven our own car when we go to New Mexico. You could get by without a car in Santa Fe since that town is very walkable but you would have to work out how to get to Santa Fe. They have a small airport but most flights go to Albuquerque. There is a train (the Rail Runner) from Albuquerque to Santa Fe but I'm not sure how easy it is to use from the airport.

Just a thought about NE driving. They are so used to snow storms that they prepare and clear the roads so quickly. Driving is not usually a problem. I visit, NH, VT, and ME whenever possible and have only canceled dinner reservations two consecutive nights during one trip. There was a blizzard and we did not think the conditions were good for driving. Most of the time the weather is very predictable...which makes planning easy. Good Luck.

Smugglers Notch, VT They have an airport shuttle. Plenty of things to do if you don't ski.
