New $360 Million Navy Ship Breaks Down - by Jeremy Diamond and Zachary Cohen/ U.S. Military/ cnn.com

"(CNN)One of the Navy's newest ships had to be towed more than 40 miles to port after it broke down Friday less than a month after it was commissioned into service.

The littoral combat ship USS Milwaukee, which boasts a $360 million price tag, broke down Thursday evening, days after the ship's crew discovered "fine metallic debris in the port combining gear filter system," the Navy said in a news release. The crew later discovered similar debris in the ship's oil filter.

The Navy described the breakdown as a "loss of propulsion." ..."

Fourth Breakdown in US Navy Littoral Combat Ship - by Brad Lendon, CNN/ U.S. Military/ Politics/ CNN/ cnn.com

"(CNN)Less than two days after the US Navy revealed a third mechanical breakdown in a year of one of its $360 million littoral combat ships, the service has announced a fourth.

The USS Coronado was on its way back to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, after suffering an "engineering casualty," a Navy statement said. It said it expected to reveal more about what happened after an inspection once the ship returned to port. The ship was heading to an independent deployment in the western Pacific when the mishap occurred. It had departed Hawaii on Friday.

The Coronado was under its own power but traveling with the escort of the tanker USNS Henry J. Kaiser on the trip back to Hawaii, the statement said.
On Monday the Navy revealed that another of its littoral combat ships, the USS Freedom, suffered engine damage in July when seawater got inside the oil lubrication system, resulting in rust in the diesel engine...."

The USS Independence (LCS 2), left, and USS Coronado (LCS 4) steam in the Pacific Ocean. The two are of the Independence variant LCS. Ships of this variant are 416.8 feet in length with a beam of 103.7 feet and a displacement of 3,100 metric tons.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

aka

If it works, don't build another that you think is so much better, but is just more complicated, expensive, and is built with lots of fancy "new" tech that just might break down.

Amid Breakdowns, Navy Struggles To Make New Ships Work - by Philip Ewing/ Politics & Policy/ Parallels: Many Stories, One World/ National Public Radio (NPR)/ npr.org

"The Navy continues struggling to get its new class of warships to work right.

When the USS Coronado set sail last week from Pearl Harbor for a planned deployment across the Pacific Ocean, it suffered engine problems and had to turn back. Before that, the Navy acknowledged that a diesel engine on another ship, the USS Freedom, was in such bad shape, it needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

Both of these are littoral combat ships, known as LCS, which are intended for operations taking place close to shore.

Other littoral combat ships have suffered problems as well. The USS Milwaukee lost power in the middle of a trip to Norfolk in December and had to be towed ashore. And before that, the USS Fort Worth sat idle for months in Singapore, crippled by its own machinery problems. Now it's limping home across the Pacific for more repairs.

The Navy acknowledged all the failures this week in a statement after the Coronado turned back to port..."

Did you know that when a nuclear powered aircraft carrier comes into port for "refueling" it's "down" for a couple of years and at a cost of about a half a Billion? Fortunately it only "gases up" every decade or so. Also, has a much better record than the LCS! :bawl:

Since this one was caused by the pilot running the thing into a wall, can't say it's bad design  It might say something about the ability to withstand battle damage:eek:

Cheers
