Planning a trip to Hawaii May of 2016. I own a 1 bedroom 2 bath oceanfront on Kauai @ the Kauai beach Club. I also own a 1 bedroom 2 bath ocean view @ the Maui Ocean Club. In addition I own a 2 bedroom Wyndham Kona Resort on the big island.

Usually my wife & I will go for 3 weeks staying a week at each place. In 2016 we will have additional family with us and the 2 bedroom unit on the BI will be fine with the additional family. I am thinking of trying to exchange the Maui unit for an additional unit at the Kauai Marriott.

That way we would stay 2 weeks in 2016, 1 week on Kauai & 1 week on the BI. That would give us 2-1 bedroom units on Kauai which should take care of the space problem.

I have never done this or any type of exchange. Is this type of exchange doable and if it is should it be done through II or are there any other avenues available to do this. When should I start looking to do it this? I would think I have to select my dates for Kauai so I would know when I would need the exchange. When would I have to deposit the Maui week into II & do I have to reserve a date for Maui in advance of depositing into II? If I do have to select a date for the Maui unit that will be deposited how do I decide on which date to reserve?

Any info or advice would be appreciated.

1. You can't start your Marriott II OGS's until May, 2015, 12 months prior, not a day sooner, I learned the hard way.

2. Make sure you add E-Plus to your OGS's. It will allow you to upgrade from a studio/1-BDRM to a 2-BDRM, change dates, or to change resorts.

3. Why not stay at the Marriott Waiohai on Kauai, all of the units are 2-BDRM. Using an OGS, you can get the the Waiohai 2-BDRM with the KBC, which still leaves you with your MOC for a week.

You can start a Marriott II OGS more than 12 months prior. You just can't start it before you have a deposit that would be good through your check in date you want. I have had an OGS for Easter 2016 and summer 2016 since June 2014 using a July 2014 check in that I deposited July 2013. I don't expect any hits this early because both locations I am looking for have float weeks that probably can't get deposits before 12 months prior. The only danger is if the June/July 2016 match isn't made, I won't have much time to use it for something else.

In terms of which week you would want to pick one with the highest TDI that would still allow you to start searching as soon as possible. Week 7 would be a good one. You could reserve that February 2015, deposit it and then start an OGS for May 2016.

Using a KBC 1BR to get a Waiohai week is a tough search. It would be a size upgrade AND an upgrade in resort desirability. I agree that there is nothing to lose by trying, but the probability of success is low. If OP puts both KBC and Waiohai into the ongoing search request, KBC is almost certain to match before a Waiohai match comes through.

May is a slow season. I've gotten Waiohai with a 1-Bdrm Shadow Ridge, 12 months out, within days of OGS. So KBC should get it, It's worth a try.

please clarify

What is the meaning of OGS?
Thanks.

We also picked up Waiohai using OGS with our one bedroom (Mountainside). It was for October of this year, and I did not place the request 12 months in advance, although that would be best. It did come through several months ahead of time. This was the most recent, but we have done this several times with Waiohai in the shoulder season.

Using our Mountainside studio, and the Marriott equivalent of E-Plus, we picked up a Maui Ocean Club one bedroom to match up with the Waiohai week this year. That was only a month ahead of the reservation, but if you already have the KBC res, E-Plus would give you the option to upgrade with your airfare already locked in.

Good luck!

Like I said, 12 months. Not only are you dependent upon your deposit, but your also dependent upon someone else depositing the unit/size that you want, 12 months out.

Although I can go on-line and see Marriott's 13 months out, I've only had luck with OGS's starting at 12 months. In fact, I've had problems if I started the OGS at 12 months + 1 or more days, the search seemed dead. When I canceled the OGS and replaced it, I got a WKORV (Westin Ka'anapali), 2-BDRM, off my 1-BDRM Marriott L/O, within 4 days: nice

No, it really is 13 months and it is valuable to know this. There are actually quite a few Marriotts deposited between 12 and 13 months out. Multiple week owners reserve consecutive or concurrent weeks and deposit the ones they do not want to use. We picked up a Newport Coast week at just under 13 months out last year. If you have an ongoing search in progress when these deposits occur, you can sometimes get a difficult exchange early on.

You are attributing the fact that you matched 4 days after your changed the search parameters to something being wrong with your search rather than coincidence, which is all that I believe was at play.
