Need just a few more points...

What is the typical way to handle the need for just a few more points to complete a reservation? As background, I am about to take possession of a single Grande Ocean Platinum week. I see that I can get 5025 points for this week.

Let’s say I want to use points for a non-home resort, but I am short on points by a little bit, for example 250-500 points. What are my options to make up the difference?

I know I could bank points and wait until the following year to combine them with the that year’s points. But I’d rather not do that for such a small number of points. Is there a way to do a one-time rental of the needed points from Marriott, or otherwise pay some cash equivalent of the needed points at reservation time? Is it possible to rent the needed points from another MVC owner on the open market and combine them with my own? How have people handled this situation in the past?

You can also borrow points from the next Use Year.
Another good alternative, thanks! I think in this case I don't want to borrow points from the future in the same way I don't want to bank the present for use in the future.

Thanks for the tip. Is this site a Marriott site, or officially sanctioned by Marriott in some way?

No, but it was developed by TUG regulars and has been used successfully for years. As yet Marriott hasn't offered an internal DC Points rental option and there's no expectation that one will be coming anytime soon.

@wballoni, it might help you to read the sticky thread in this forum, linked here: FAQ - MVC DESTINATIONS Points Program. And welcome to TUG! :)

Is the week you’re taking possession from a family gift or buying an enrolled week directly from Marriott? I’ve been toying with getting into DC points myself.

Also be careful that you don't equate the "price" in points for your week in a high season with what Marriott actually gives you for an enrolled week, which is generally equal to the non-high season, non-holiday weekly rate. This reduction is known as skim on these boards

CPNY, it is a gift from my parents. I started another thread on it asking questions about any limitations, how to use the week, etc. Turns out it is enrolled and everyone is saying that as a gift from a relative, it is entitled to all the benefits my parents currently enjoy once I take possession.

I'm really looking forward to using it!

Good advice, I will have a look. I didn't look at it initially because I thought it didn't apply to me as a soon-to-be week owner. Lots of crossover apparently, since the week is enrolled!

Yeah, I saw that. I can get 5025 points for my Platinum week; it would take 5400 points to reserve the same week! I assume that's what you are referring to as skim (good name for it).

Keeping in mind, you would of course never do that, you'd simply use your week!

Keep in mind It doesn’t always cost more points for the same week in your season so there isn’t always a skim.

Since your siblings are also each getting an enrolled week, you can do the “renting” amongst yourselves in years some of you play in the points arena. It’s a simple points Transfer process done via a short call with MVC. It would be a great way for you all to shed points in years you have too many, or grab a few extra in years you are a bit short.

What a great idea! Not sure what their plans are with their weeks/points, but I'm sure it will come up once in a while that someone can't use their week or has spare points.

I've had great luck with trading my "worthless", (Marriott Sales weasle speak for my weeks) bronze Barony weeks for some great vacations in Interval International. Some have been prime time, the beach at Myrtle, for my sister in law. If you are able to get a good trade for a week in a destination you like, do that with your old school week vice trading it for points. Do the math and see if that would work, with the trading fees and all vice renting some points from an owner. I have both old school weeks, which I love, along with some points.
