So far, I sent e-mail invitations to the BOD and management, added a link to the bottom of my posts, posted on TS4MS, sent an e-mail to folks who provided their addresses in the review section [I hope most of them are owners]. What else can I do??

Charles

Ask Manor Club management if they are willing to allow you to post a message somewhere at Manor Club that other owners will see. If you show them that the group intention is to increase owner awareness, and not to promote resort bashing, maybe they'll go for it.

Maybe in the marketplace, or in the lobby, or at the concierge desk above the wall of pamphlets. Even better would be in the information panel in each of the elevators. Then everyone will see it.

That would be fantastic, but I doubt that they will agree. Such a thing would have to float by Marriott legal and would be a big magilla. Nevertheless, I'll pose the question if and when Marriott replies to my survey response and the e-mails I've sent regarding the group.

I don't think Marriott would ever allow this. The last thing they want is to have their "dirty laundry" aired publicly. (Hopefully this is figurative, and not literal. :) ) At any rate, Marriott certainly does not want to give owners, exchangers, and/or guests an open invitation to a forum where people are going to list their concerns about the resort.

Think about it. No business would want this...especially in the hospitality industry. Perfectly happy owners and guests finding a web address from a posting in the lobby or elevator, going online, and finding a discussion of things that are "wrong" with the resort. Suddenly content owners and guests become discontent. Little things that they never noticed become big issues.

Even positive posts on an open forum can be hazardous. For example, let's say someone on the forum had stayed in one of the huge three bedroom villas in Berkeley Manor that most owners don't even know exist. They loved it and posted all about how fantastic it was on the Marriott owner's forum.

Joe and Mary Owner are currently staying at Manor Club. They were perfectly happy in their typical two bedroom villa in Governor's Manor until they saw the Marriott owners forum advertised in the lobby. Now they've gone online and found out that not only are all the Berkeley Manor villas larger...but there are a couple of huge three bedroom villas in that building that are given to two bedroom owners each week. (All villas were sold as floating two bedroom ownerships at Manor Club. The three bedroom villas were not sold as such.)

Now Joe and Mary are discontent and march right down to the resort manager's office. They demand to know why they weren't given one of these three bedroom villas. After all, they own four weeks, purchased directly from Marriott, and have been loyal owners for over eight years.

In contrast, they read on the Marriott owner's forum that the people who got the three bedroom just bought their week last year on eBay...and only paid $7500. Joe and Mary were happy, but now they are furious. Why did those people get special treatment? Not a good situation.

I agree with you. I think it would be unlikely that MMC allows it, but it doesn't hurt to ask, right?

I work for one of the largest IT companies in the world. Last year, we released a new enhancement to our website. It is a board such as this one where customers can talk shop about our products. Customers do rant on about their frustrations, and they also provide a great benefit to other customers who are looking for direction about a specific customization or problem resolution. There are negatives to it, but there are also huge positives. Allowing customers to help each other lessens the workload to the support organizations (in most cases).

Turning that to the MMC case, I think the benefit of the Yahoo group would outweigh the negatives. Owners would provide answers to other owners that would otherwise require a call to MMC or MVCI. Owners would also find out about new things to do while at MMC which would increase the overall vacation satisfaction, which in turn increases MMC satisfaction surveys by virtue of proximity (overall satisfaction carries over to satisfaction with all aspects of the vacation).

I still don't have high hopes that MMC/MVCI would allow it, but again, it doesn't hurt to ask.

It's a sad state of affairs.

I asked the GM how many folks attend the annual meeting. I think he said maybe 30 show up and the resort has 10,000 owners. There is precious little communication between the BOD and the owners and owners have no way of speaking with each others. This is good for management but bad for the owners.

I think it depends on your GM. We also have a yahoo owners group for Ocean Pointe. When I was there in March, it was mentioned on the weekly activities sheet. In fact, it was done as a meeting (right) after the weekly breakfast for anyone that was interested in the group and was listed as such on the activities sheet. The staff mentioned it again at the end of the breakfast for anyone that was interested in checking it out. I already belonged to the group but stayed because it was fun to put some faces to names and actually talk in person. We also were able to recruit a few new members. Evidently they do this often, at least all of the weeks that one of our board members is staying there. (She's there for like 10 weeks in the winter.)

BTW, our GM also posts information, via a board member, on the site from time to time.

WOW!

That's terrific! I'll look for the group and mention the precedent to the Manor Club GM when I contact him next. He is on vacation right now.

Charles

At one time, it was possible to get a list of names and addresses of the members at your resort but then it was stopped because of concern of invasion of privacy but it may be possible to get the same information from the public records as I have done this for a resort where we own but it is a lot of work and it may not be possible in every state. I don't know.

Do you have 400 members already since you are the OP? That is very impressive as you just started. This is the only way we can make the Association take note of our wishes if the majority vote is from the resort developer. A board governed by owners will not waste money and will listen to the owners. Good for you!

Charles,

I just purchased a resale MMC on eBay after the family stayed for a week in early June. We loved the place. The ink is not yet dry on our closing, but I would be interested in joining the yahoo group once we have documentation in-hand.

The size and activity of the OP group is impressive.

I believe that CMF meant OP= Ocean point not Original poster

Purchase some T-Shirts and Hats advertising your Group and be sure to wear them when residing on the Marriott property.

Owners will come up to you and ask what it's all about, so be prepared in advance to hand them something which instructs them how they themselves are able to join and participate.

I hate to stand out in a crowd . . . . I don't even wear my Yankees hat anymore because someone would undoubtedly comment. I got comments across casino floors, boarding airplanes, just about anywhere you can think off. So I don't think I'm going to wear something that will encourage people to come up and talk to me. Just shy I guess.

I am impressed and surprised by Ocean Points willingness to mention the owners group. I would think any property would be against this for the exact reasons that LuvOurMarriotts stated.

But I commend Charles for trying to get the word out. I think an owners group forum is terrific. Wish we had one for Shadow Ridge.

TimeTravelers suggestion of wearing hats or shirts while on property is terrific! LOL.

MGV has a smaller group, about 150. The activity there goes in spurts. Sometimes there are lots of posts, others there are not. For a resort of its size there should be plenty of members.
