I've thrown in the towel after 15 years, and have decided to get a new fridge. I love the look of our old one (a spiffy shiny black side by side Jenn-Air) but after every shelf on the door died as well as one of the major inside shelves well, I have no choice.

So, I logged on to consumer reports and found the best one (based on THIS month's review). It's a Sears Kenmore Elite. Which, they NO LONGER make and have not replaced the model with a similar one!

Geez...why bother with consumer reports if you can't even get the product the SAME month the issue is published?

So...who has a french door fridge with a bottom freezer that they LOVE??? And, what kind did you get?

We just got one like that. Water and Ice thru the door, electronic temp controls, all the bells and whistles. Who knows how good it is rated, and the way my wife fell for this, who cares! I don't buy things based on consumer reports anymore. Some of my favorite purchases were poorly rated, and some of my most hated products were highly rated. We get what we want.

We just did some research and saw the Samsung RF266AEPN at Sears. This last four letters relate to the color, which in this case is Platinum (also referred to as Stainless Steel like). It is a french door style with the freezer on the bottom. We ultimately did not buy it as we are hoping our current frig will last another year or so. However, we really liked it and Samsung frig's have been highly rated. We liked the Platinum because it looks like stainless, but doesn't show smudges and is magnetic. My wife likes to put magnets of the different places we have visited over the years. Sears had this unit on sale and it just ended, but I would bet it will be offered again some time soon. I would encourage you to check it out. Good luck.

The Samsungs are highly rated on www.consumersearch.com
... its a "best of" digest that reviews other reviews.

BTW, there is no Kenmore plant. The products which bear its name are actually produced by a variety of manufacturers under contract to Sears. Its quite possilble that Whirlpool made the one you were after.

I do! I do! It's a Maytag and I got it at Home Depot. Love it.

I have big fridge on top, fabulous bottom door. Ice maker in freezer was our preference, I believe you can get in-door models.

Amana.

Our last fridge was Amana also. I love how easy to take out shelves to clean or rearrange. We forget they are pullouts, a convenience we never got used to, but great for reaching your stuff easily.

roomy door holders, also adjustable. nice deep crisper drawers and a separate meet and cheese pullout. shelves are clear and easy to clean.

freezer also has pull-outs, making it soo easy to see what you have.

Never a problem with either of them (first stayed in our first house).

I looooovvvve having a fat fridge to hold take n bake pizzas from Costco for a few hours until game time. I would never have a side by side again after seeing how many big casserole dishes I can store in this thing.

I never did see the attraction for a side by side. My brother has one and the inside is so skinny. It's hard to find a place to put things. It's even worse on the freezer side.

The French door fridges seem popular and a better choice for space than the side by sides. What I don't like is the pull-out freezer drawer. I have to stand next to it to get into the back/bottom. I prefer a door on my freezer rather than a drawer. It makes it easier to access all parts of the freezer compartment.

Bosch has some built-in french door, bottom freezer units but they are spendy. My first car didn't even cost that much!

That sounds like the one we had. I really liked it, too. Unfortunately, when we remodeled the kitchen, we had to replace it with a counter-depth model because of space issues or I would still be using it.

Like others, we are very satisfied with our (10 yr-old) Amana bottom freezer. I suppose french doors on top would be convenient, but not a deal-killer either way. One thing I've noticed on many newer bottom freezer fridges is that one has to roll out the entire contents of the freezer- like a drawer. This seems (a) heavy, and (b) inefficient- dumping all the cold air out every time it's opened. I prefer ours with just a swinging door and sliding baskets inside.

On our Maytag pull-out freezer there are sliding shelves so that if what you want isn't in the top bin, it's very easy push that bin back to see what's in the bottom. With the freezer on the bottom, I'd have to get down on my hands & knees to see what was inside if it had a door instead of a pull-out drawer.

No, even my husband doesn't have to do that. It's more convenient than I thought.

Open door, pull out shelf.

less weight to pull out top shelf or bottom shelf vs whole canoly via drawer.

have not had drawer model.

Look at the LG.

We've had our new Samsung French door/bottom drawer freezer model since January and like it a lot. It's the counter depth model, so narrower than some, because we needed the space in our kitchen.

You'll find that many of the French door refrigerators don't do ice dispensers in the door (just water) because, since there's no freezer unit behind the door, they have to install a separate ice maker unit there that's insulated like a freezer. Many just have water, and then have an ice maker in the drawer that dispenses ice cubes into a bin. We wanted the door ice dispenser. I saw some complaints online about the Samsung ice maker like ours not making enough ice for some families. We're fairly light ice users, so it hasn't been an issue at all for us, and I'd probably just buy a bag of ice for a party.

I like the pull out drawer. One thing to look for in the drawers is to have a solid bottom on it; some are made more like an open basket, and then you can have issues with ice crystals from stored food dropping on the floor when it's pulled out and melting.

We looked at the comparable Bosch - it was very nice but we decided the additional price wasn't worth it for us. We haven't had any complaints about our Samsung. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much it holds and how flexible the shelving is, and how much the freezer drawer holds. (We do have a separate freeer, too.) We had an old Whirlpool side-by-side, and I find the French door model works better for my needs.

Good advice! I bought a Samsung 28 cu ft, french door, dual cooling etc etc etc. Lucky for me that it was on sale at Best Buy, AND I had a $200 off coupon! I hope I get $2k worth of enjoyment out of it. At least my plethora of condiments will have a lovely new home and my ice won't taste like broccoli anymore!

We recently had our old fridge pass away, so we went to Sears and bought an Amana, french door with an ice maker. We do0n't have ice through the door. but we can handle the small inconvenience of opening the freezer to get ice. Also, everything in at eye level- no bending over and standing on our heads to see what in on the bottom shelf.

I'm jealous. My refrigerator has to fit into a very small space, so I can't get anything as large as I'd prefer. I also bought my last one from Best Buy - am very happy with it. Previous was from Sears and always had problems with the auto-defrost system.

We bought a Samsung French door with the bottom freezer a year ago and we really like it. One drawback is that the water filter lasts only about 6 months and cost about $30. We do use a lot of filtered water though.

We have a Samsung french door...bought in Dec 2009. It's the biggest one they make...I think 29.5 cf. We love it. It has dual icemakers...one in the door and one in the bottom freezer. We have had no problems so far... but I would caution that magnets on the faux stainless finish do scratch...I now have mine on the side panel. Also we have not had to replace the water filter yet...good luck in choosing. We got ours at Lowe's on sale.
