When you returned to NYC, how was the disembarking? We went on that cruise a few years ago, and it was a nightmare. Hundreds of people waiting for cabs, and they came about 15 minutes apart. Wound up lugging all our bags back into the terminal, and luckily, a limo driver asked us if we wanted a ride to NJ. Of course we took him up on it. I think there were 3 boats in at the same time, and the NCL pier was the 3rd one down.
We had arranged with our local cab company that they would come and pick us up. (We live in NJ.) They had said to call them when we were actually leaving the ship. The dispatcher said to wait by a certain sign, and after about 10 minute, our cab showed up.
It was probably $10 more than the yellow cab from NYC would have been, but it was a lot more convenient, and my MIL really could not have waited on a line for any length of time. We left her inside with DH while I went outside and scouted for the taxi.
Also...we waited quite a while to get off the ship. We purposely got one of the very last disembarkation tickets, so the crowds would be less and they would be less anxious.
HTH! I can give you the name of my local cab company, or there are some good car services in Manhattan that would provide reliable pickup for about the same price.
