We have sealed unmarked meat in the freezer. I think these bags of meat were in a marked larger bag but no one knows. At first it looked like cod, halbuit or rock fish. After letting it thaw a bit it looked like rotisserie chicken from Costco. My wife made a pasta with white sauce type meal with it. Turns out it was turkey.

We occasionally find those type of bags in our big chest freezer as well. I am usually pretty good at labelling everything with what it is and the date but sometimes I am in a hurry and think oh I will remember what that is. HA!

We come across these things every so often in our freezer.

We call them UFO's..............."Unidentified Frozen Objects".

True story: when I was growing up, my mother and a close family friend (who was a grandmother-type-person to me--my "GMTP") purchased a duplex together. We had the top floor apartment and a re-done attic bedroom that was mine; she had the bottom floor apartment. We had a cat, and, to save $$, my mother often made our own cat food out of usually tuna and (appropriate) veggie scraps. She would then sometimes freeze it in the chest freezer that GMTP had in her half of the house.

One night, my GMTP, who was in various classical musical groups (she played the recorder and french horn) was hosting a group for dinner in her apartment. She often hosted these kinds of impromptu dinners, and would, in anticipation of not knowing when they were needed, would make salmon and tuna loaves periodically in advance and then freeze them to use for these kind of occasions.

If you haven't figured out the punchline to this story yet......yes, without my mother knowing until after the fact, my GMTP did end up thawing, baking, and serving one of the "cat food" loaves, thinking it was one of her tuna loaves. The good news is that my mother is such a good cook that, while my GMTP thought it tasted a little off/different to her, none of the guests commented, they finished their servings, and no one got sick. The guests were none the wiser. ;)

They both did a better job labeling what went into the chest freezer after that, LOL!

Ok slightly tangential to the thread but this post is the *first time* I have ever seen “salmon loaf” mentioned outside of my family. And I have a salmon loaf story.

Back in the 80s I had just started dating my now husband. We were poor college kids at the time and we never turned down a free meal. One Friday night my grandparents invited us over for dinner which we readily accepted. I realized in a bit that it was Friday during Lent and I am not a fan of fish (which was sure to be featured) but it was too late to back out. We would be eating one of my grandma’s fish concoctions.

We arrived and my grandma told me that the local drug store (Longs) had a sale on canned salmon (no!) and that she had made salmon loaf for dinner (NO!!). It was worse than expected. I could hardly force it down but my sweet boyfriend ate all of his then asked for seconds! Bless him.

Then he asked for the recipe.

Later, as we walked to the car I said to him, I am never willingly eating salmon loaf again, so when he made it just count me out. That’s when he said “no problem, that was pretty bad. I won’t be making it”. Then I asked why he asked for the recipe and he said “to make your grandma feel good”.

Such a sweet memory.

And for the record, there were multiple mentions of my grandma’s salmon loaf at her wake. It wasn’t a family favorite. :D

A very sweet story. Possibly one of the many reasons you chose to marry that guy.

Please tell me where can you find this type of story on the internet. LOL

And that's when you decided he was a "keeper'? :)

UFOs . . . I love it! We had my brother-in-law and his wife renting our inlaws' suite in the lower level of our home. They used our deep freeze down there as well. Since moving out last summer, we've seen several ziplocks of mystery meat. We're not daring enough to do anything other then throw them out. Maybe I should tell Chef David (my DH) we should be more daring?
