So it is a symbiotic relationship both species seem enjoy.

I have read articles online thats domesitcated themselves - so essentailly they chose to live with humans. Basically, when mankind first started to grow and store grain, of course there was a rodent problem. Which attracted cats, who decided to stick around (apparently they know a good thing when they see it).

I am sending good thoughts your way also. I have lost a beloved cat and dog this year and it is somehow comforting to hear from all of the animal lovers on TUG. It was especially hard to see my children experience this for the first time. We so love our furry babies.
