My son and daughter in law are moving from Memphis, TN to San Diego, CA and have a case of sticker shock over the $13,000 quote from a known moving company. They are looking at other options and are considering ABF (Arkansas Best Freight) where you pack your own belongings, load the truck yourself (which is left at your home for 2 days+)and then ABF drives the truck to the new location, where again, you would unload your own goods.

I've read good reviews on this company...just would like to know if any tuggers have their own experience with them...or a similar "U Pack" moving company.

Regards,
Carlene

Hi,
I will let you know my experience with ABF on Thursday. The truck was dropped off Wed & picked up yestewrday (Fri,) They are a union sahop & do not move on weekends or holidays so my truck will get there on Wed & after unloading the commercial load should be at my daughter's on Thursday. We only had one room to move so the two days were MORE than enough but if I were doing a houseful, I would have everything packed & staged in one or two rooms. We only used 5 feet of the 28 foot trailer from Lew York to Wilmington NC & the cost was $699. There are different rates for different times of the month. I will be sure to update after arrival.

Thanks, Sheila ~

I'll be anxious to hear your feedback! My son did get all the details set up with ABF....and from what I've read, they seem very reliable. He is also looking into them taking out one car...and a motorcycle!

Its always good to hear from any Tuggers on their own experiences though!

Good luck....and I'll look forward to hearing back from you.

I have a good friend that works in their home office and he says it is an excellent way to move if you want to save several thousand $$$$.

Dale,

I agree...especially after that $13,000 quote they first got!! A little 'man power' with all of us helping to pack is worth the savings!!

My husband moved that way when he moved from California to Colorado. It worked well. They measure how much of the truck your stuff "took up" and charge you that way. Because you aren't professional movers, don't expect the stuff to travel as well as it would with them. We packed carefully and tried to pack tightly, etc., but we found stuff had shifted. On the whole, though, we were pleased with the experience.

One of the keys is to have a good tight fitting load. That what the movers were telling me when they moved us.

On a similar note have you checked out www.pods.com?

Starting to see them around more and more.

Moosie,

Yes...my son actually checked into these first and found the pods were too small for his needs. I think they did have something else to offer also...but then ABF ended up being less expensive overall.

Thanks everyone...for your feedback.

Update on ABF Moving. Trailer was delivered on Wednesday & picked up on Friday. Although the info was that they do not go in transit on week ends or holidays (Monday being Labor Day) It was at it's destination on Tuesday & we called for drop off & it was dropped off this morning (Wed.) I thought the service was very good. My only problem was that I think we made a mistake by accepting a truck, though clean, had holes & we did get leakage but I did have tarps & mattress & box springs in the bags they sell which is well worth the money. All in all, I think they are a reputable company and very professional. I bought tarps 8X10 in Lowe's which were perfect size & cost $6.79 each. Good luck with your move
