Any recommendations for the new movies that have been released? I'd like to see Australia and the Day the Earth Stood Still. Anyone seen these? Any good?

James Bond 007.

I'm itching to go see the latest James Bond 007 movie.

If it weren't for all the rehearsals & concerts & shopping & family events going on, I'd try to sneak out to the megaplex & catch the show 1 of these days.

The producers pretty much revived the franchise when they cast Daniel Craig as 007.

We caught the previous Daniel Craig 007 movie when we were on vacation in Orlando FL. The way things are going, maybe history will repeat itself next month (if that feature is still playing in the movie houses when we get there).

We'll see, eh ?

We saw it a couple of weeks ago. Those in our party who were fans of the newest James Bond really liked it. But to me, the REAL James Bond will always be Sean Connery. There's lots of action, chase scenes, fighting, and shooting if that's what you like.

I enjoyed "Four Christmases" for something light-hearted and funny. I'm a Reese Witherspoon fan.

My daughter loved Twilight.

We thought Four Christmases was ok; I had a nice nap during the fourth part :p

The Changeling was excellent; definitely intense, and had some scenes I couldn't look at, but overall excellent.

The reviews I have seen haven't been good. Excerpts from the Wall Street Journal (which had good things to say about Australia and Gran Torino):

"What's never explained is why anyone would do such a dumb remake of [the] 1951 sci-fi classic."

"...this sorry second is as cold and blank as the expression on [Keanu] Reeves' face."

"In the spirt of critical altruism, I say stay home and watch the real thing on DVD."

I'd love to see "Australia". I have no interest in the other one, which got terrible reviews, at least in our paper.

We just saw the new James Bond movie tonight. I thought it was pretty good--it was violent, but less violent than the first Daniel Craig movie.

Slumdog Millionaire is supposed to be fantastic. We would have seen that tonight, but it's only playing at the "expensive" theater. Maybe next weekend!

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. DH saw "Day the Earth Stood Still" today (he is out of town) and said it wasn't all that great.

We saw "Quantum of Solace" a few weeks ago and I didn't like it all that well. It was hard for me to follow. I do think Craig is an excellent James Bond.

Ahhh...Twilight. I read the first book because my dd wanted me to read it before the movie came out. As I started reading the book I thought it was rather lame--who wants to read about a teenage romance? Anyway, it very quickly drew me in and I've read all four plus the Midnight Sun rough draft (it's only a partial retelling of Twilight in Edward's voice). I'm embarrassed to admit, but I'm addicted to this romance series. I don't read much fiction and I always looked down my nose at romance novels but this one had lots of humor and great dialogue. I love the way Meyers describes things. She has an entertaining way with words.

I didn't like the movie the first time I saw it because it left out some of my favorite lines from the book. DH (who also has become a fan if you can believe it) agreed with me that if you haven't read the books, the movie doesn't always make alot of sense. However, to be fair, I went back to see it a second time with the idea that it was only an interpretation of the book and I liked it better when I didn't compare it so critically. Then I went a third time just because I wanted to get out of the house (lots of sheetrock dust around here).

I loved the book, Secret Life of Bees, but I never made it to the theater to see it. It is on my Netflix cue.

We rarely get to movies, but did go last weekend and saw Cadillac, the story of Cress Records in Chicago. Has excellent music and acting and tells the story of blues legends, Muddy Waters, Lil Walter, Etta James and Chuck Berry.

Ive not seen anything at the theatres since the dark night and ironman which I both loved.

Shame about the earth stood still movie...I thought that looked really good!

DH and I went to see this yesterday based on your recommendation. It was very good. I must admit that based on the title I probably would not have given it a second thought--and would not have guessed what it was really about. I've not heard anything about the movie except here on TUG. It is not showing at our usual theater--had to go looking for a theater and found one across the valley. DH and I both give it a thumbs up. :)

Dd and I saw "Australia" a few days ago. While we both enjoyed it we agreed it was not Baz Luhrmann's best. For me, that would be "Strictly Ballroom", with "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge" coming in right behind it.

I hope "Slumdog Millionaire" comes here soon. This week we saw Jim Carrey's "Yes Man" and Will Smith's "Seven Pounds."

Yes Man was funny and I enjoyed it. I'm still thinking about whether or not I liked Seven Pounds. I thought it was an interesting way to tell a story, but it was so sad.

Just saw The Day the Earth Stood Still. We thought it was pretty good. There really wasn't an ending, but I think it was better than the earlier posts led me to expect.

DW & I saw Australia the first weekend it was released. We thought it was fantastic! In fact, I said I thought it would get a best picture nomination. Imagine my surprise that it's been a dud. But it's a great film! Go see it before it leaves. Just be prepared for a long movie (2:45 I think). But it's so good, you leave wanting more.

I concur with your comments about Australia. I saw it a few days ago. The scenery was fantastic and I loved the entire movie. I couldn't keep my eyes dry for the last ten minutes of the movie.

As a relative dud at the box office, it's on it's way out. Two of the three theaters in my area dropped it effective today.

We saw the Dark Knight on the IMAX screen in Myrtle Beach over Thanksgiving. (Broadway at the Beach)
It was great, mostly because of the huge screen and stadium seating, you felt like you were nose to nose with the characters.
