Mayflower Hotel (aka Washington DC Pulse) updates

My wife and I recently stayed at the Washington DC Pulse and once again had a wonderful stay. There are some changes from our last visit and thought an update would be in order...

First of all, the MVC 'owner station' outside the elevators on the 7th floor is once again fully up and running. Morning coffee and a variety of pastries (croissants, danishes, and muffins) appeared around 7:15AM-ish. And in the evening, coffee was still available around 7:30PM-ish along with some fruit and (guessing from an empty basket and small plates) some cookie-like dessert. For those of you who have visited in the past, the lounge is long gone and the $27/person elite benefit at Edgar is no longer offered for MVC stays.

In a related note, our villa was now equipped with a Keurig. I have no way of knowing, but I'm guessing that this is hotel wide as the complementary morning coffee and tea service is no longer offered in the lobby. Edgar was doing a good business selling takeaway pastries and beverages.

Full room service has also resumed. Our beds were made, our coffee supplies replaced, and the room cleaned.

Lastly, the TVs have been upgraded and now offer access to a variety of internet video services as well as a nice channel guide. I can't swear that this is an upgrade from *my* last visit (since I ignore the TV) but was an upgrade from our last visit together.
 
I loved having access to the lounge for morning breakfast. Then getting all the water bottles and soda pop through out the day saves some money.
 
So much for the historical standing of the property. When we were there earlier the MVC floor was a pretty beat-up, dingy old hotel and MVC had done no updating. We haven't been back because of this and no assurance it was now habitable.

Is it now up to a reasonable standard for Pulse properties? I am hopeful the answer is "yes."

At our last stay at the Custom House (aka Boston Pulse) the villa was more 'beat up' than our villa at the Mayflower. Still, I would rank the Custom House higher because of its extraordinary views (no 1BRs at the Mayflower overlook Connecticut Ave).

The South Beach Pulse is much newer than the Mayflower but the furnishings at the Mayflower much nicer.

We haven't stayed at any of the other Pulse properties so I can't comment from personal experience. The SF Pulse is new but from the pictures I've seen the furnishings are of much lower quality than those at the Mayflower.

Of course, no Abound property at which we've stayed compares to the quality of the SF Ritz Carlton Club...but that is an RCC.
 
We stayed at the Mayflower Pulse earlier this year. The room was smallish but nicely appointed and perfectly comfortable for our needs. We weren't in the room that often anyway. It had a great shower and enough room for our luggage, etc. We weren't tripping over each other and the bed was very comfortable. We had a sort of light well view as I recall so no view to speak of, but also no noise.

When we were there (March) there was occasionally someone working in the MVC station on our floor, and he tried unsuccessfully (but not too aggressively) to get us to do an owner presentation (we didn't have time.) Most of the time there was nobody there though. There was a small fridge there but it was empty. We got all the small bottles of water we needed from the front desk (I assumed that meant "our plumbing is ancient, don't drink the tap water" though that wasn't said explicitly) but there was no coffee or pastries. Edgar does a great breakfast but of course it's not cheap. There's also a great French cafe a couple blocks north which has great coffee, pastries, and cooked-to-order stuff.

I would absolutely stay there again, the location is hard to beat.

What's the name of the French cafe? Starting to build our list for first time visit this upcoming spring!

Not sure if it’s the same one, but we enjoyed Tatte Bakery and Cafe (Dupont Circle location) which very well may be it. They also have them in Boston (one fairly near the Custom House). It was our go-to breakfast spot while at the Mayflower.

Yes, that's the one. It's often very busy (for good reason) but I'd recommend it for breakfast or lunch.
 
I haven’t been back in a while but I thought it was very nice. First floor was lined with Christmas trees. We Love the location. I’m not sure if this is still the case but back then, depending on when you went you might get a better deal with cash or reward points, unless of course you just need to use what you already paid for.

There doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the hotel and timeshare rooms. Weekends are typically cheaper at the hotel and week days require fewer Abound points. I think I would now try to stay at the hotel for the Titanium benefits.
 
Does The Mayflower offer building tours to Abound members given it's historic standing? How about local tours? We visited Boston's Custom House last year and they offered both.
