We are considering renting a 2 bedroom villa at Newport Coast resort. The official Marriott website states maximum of 6 guests but the rental listing states 6-8. Does Marriott check to see how many guests are in your room? We are a party of 8, 7 adults and one 8 yr old.

I thought 8 guests were allowed at Newport Coast. There is a king bed in the master bedroom. 2nd Bedroom has a queen & sofa bed, but it's very tight in there when the sofa bed is pulled out. There is an additional sofa in the living room.

The sofa beds aren't very comfortable for 2 adults, but I don't think they offer rollaway beds at this property.

Edited to answer your question:
They won't check to see how many guests are in your room. I don't recall if they issue wristbands at this property for the pool.

We are at NCV for the winter. A few weeks ago my wife had a girls weekend here, and we rented two extra villas for the weekend. One group of women wanted to put eight in one unit, so I checked with the front desk. The response was that even though the Marriott website indicates a limit of six, they do in fact allow eight per unit, so you should be OK.

Same experience here. Went to NCV with my family (3) and my brother's family (5) and had no problems at all.
