Aloha HI Team!
Saw someone's post at FB HGVC group that it took them 3+ hrs to get from KBC (Ka'anapali beach resort, HGVC/HVC to get to OGG (Maui airport) & they missed their flight despite the $200 uber ride :-( ...
How long is the usual commute time from Ka'anapali beach resorts to OGG?
Any Tips of best time to head out, to avoid traffic?
Mahalo!

It's normally 45 min. or so. The worst time is morning and evening commute.

Maui airport can also have unexpected delays now and then. So give yourself more than enough time.
We have TSA Precheck and still arrive at least two hours before on flight departure.

The problem is that much of Hwy 30 between Lahaina and the airport is only one lane in each direction. Sometimes there are accidents that close down the highway for hours. Occasionally a fire or very high surf will make it unsafe to travel. It doesn't happen all the time, but is not all that rare either. There is little you can do to plan for it. You could be doing good time when an accident happens and the rest of your journey to the airport is delayed.

The traffic in Maui, especially past the Kihei cutoff, has always been a bummer with the exception of between 10pm and 6am or Sunday, imo. Saturday is the worst.

We are on Maui currently. If you get behind a caravan of dump trucks taking debris from the West Lahaina temporary dump location to the Maui dump, you could be in for a slow drive.

Yesterday, as we were going north from the Kihei area to West Maui, a regular pickup truck stopped in the lane going south for absolutely no reason. Dead stop. Nothing in front of the guy, nothing but some ocean waves going over the wall near Olowalu. That was just a little splash of water. He didn't want his truck to get wet? It's almost as if the guy wanted to stop this long line of traffic coming down off of the By-Pass road. Or he was out of gas and didn't move his truck over. It sure looked intentional. He was looking forward and not acting like he was having trouble with his truck. There was no one in front of him for a mile or two. We were surprised to see the line of the back-up of traffic as we drove north. Then to see him blocking everyone from going to Kahului, was INSANE and probably intentionally done.

Sounds crazy but this is exactly the kind of stuff a lot of people have complained about (with awful traffic exp with the dump trucks etc)..
Not nice..

Exactly..
This is terrible...
Yours truly always leaves super early because you never know and now, will be even more prudent...
Our trip to OGG is in Jan/Feb next year, and return flight is a red eye on AA, so will plan to head from Ka'anapali beach area to OGG in early evening and spend a few hours at their bare bones lounge or open air watching sunset etc at OGG

We usually did our West Maui weeks and then our Kihei weeks. I've never had a problem with going to OGG from Kihei. It's true that I've never had a problem going to OGG from West Maui either.

We have stayed at West Maui many times; once soon after the fires but traffic was not such an issue for us...
Sadly, they will take forever to fix this...
Mahalo!

We were going opposite direction on Friday. Waves were breaking over the road on the southbound side and flooding the road at points. That side was stopping and moving to northbound lanes as opposing traffic moved to right shoulder. Also, the Lahaina debris removal trucks have a light that also slowed traffic. It was a somber drive thinking of all the houses and humans likely in all that fill.

We always stay in Kihei and usually make at least one trip to West Maui. This year we didn't. Last year we went up for the day and came home around 3 p.m. Horrible traffic. We think this was due to so many people getting off work and traveling to the other side of the island.

took them 3+ hrs
could be 45 minutres. could be 180 minutes. Welcome to West Maui. This was predictable the day the fire hit. And the Maui govt cannot be expected to do anything but make things worse (in their grief).
We haven't been to Wailea in, idk, 15 yrs. That is where we'll go next yr in our first trip to Maui in 5 yrs.

Sorry for the tourists, but it really makes me feel for the service workers who live in Wailuku or Kahului. No room in WM. STR wars full steam
