I find myself needing to find on off-season week on Maui to rent. I haven't rented a place on Maui since 2000. After that, we bought our Westin Ka'anapali timeshare and have never had to rent a week from a private party. I am looking for safe places to rent from, or a site where owners trade weeks with each other.

I was looking at Redweek, which seems to have a lot of weeks available. Has anyone had recent experiences renting from Redweek? Is there anything I need to beware of, like should I only consider the Verified & Protected weeks?

I could also rent a condo because we used to do that from 1989-2000, but we have become quite accustomed to the Westin resort experience. Is the best place to find condos on vrbo or airbnb? I have never needed to use those sites ever for anything.

Thanks for any advice. Hopefully, I won't need to rent/trade a week in 2024!

Denise

We use Trading Places Maui for our trades. They don't have a huge inventory, but they do have more Maui Hill (which is where we own and what we want to trade into) than other companies. I don't know if they do rentals as well.

I haven't used Redweek, but I've heard good things about renting through them.

I would not suggest Vrbo (ridiculous fees) or airbnb (fees and also many of their rentals are not legal).

We rented on Maui this year, one week to go along with our Maui Hill week, and next year we will rent two weeks. We used Rentals Maui, but they mostly handle south Maui properties. Here is a link to rental companies that handle west Maui.

"Verified & Protected" means that Redweek is the rental agent for the rental, and you have to go through them to process the rental. Many people feel that Redweek's rental services are slow and indifferent. The fact that a timeshare owner didn't hire Redweek as their rental agent shouldn't be a concern, as long as you do your due diligence, as you should with all rentals.

Thanks, @DeniseM. I was trying to figure out what the difference was, so I will look at all the Redweek listings, then. I don't want to pay extra fees if it isn't necessary.

Thanks, @Luanne. My sister uses vrbo and airbnb ALL the time, and I have always been wary. Thank you for the links.

Airbnb is fine in many areas. But Maui is cracking down on illegal short term rentals. There are some airbnbs that are fine, but it seems like too much trouble to figure out which ones are. We used to use Vrbo, but as I said their fees have gotten ridiculous. There are lots of local agencies out there that are much better.

Please note - to find your date, you have to select "sort by date" at the top of the page, otherwise Redweek shows you all of their listings FIRST.

I have been renting units via Redweek for over a decade now (supplementing my own units), and have never had an issue. I generally only use Verified postings on Redweek, but avoid the Full Service ads because there's no way I'm paying the additional taxes and fees that are automatic. I prefer renting directly via an owner. On the other side of this, I have rented our 2BR unit at MOC out via Redweek for just as long, only ever using a Verified ad on Redweek. So far, so good.
