Considering purchasing into MOC and would be interested in some Maui veterans preference Regarding the two towers at MOC. My understanding is these were both ground up builds rather than hotel conversions, which I prefer, but what are the pluses and minuses between the two? Any preference of one over the other? Are the ocean fronts truly “on the ocean” rather than just a view?
Any advice/opinions greatly appreciated.
Lahaina is closer to the ocean. Lahaina is also next to the larger parking garage.
Napili is closer to Whalers Village and Black Rock. I feel Napili is set back a little farther than Lahaina but it’s still nice.
What @StevenTing said. I would add that in terms of purchasing a MOC Sequel week, if you buy a floating Ocean Front week you own the right to stay in either Napili or Lahaina. You can ask for either tower and (thus far) my request has always been granted. Ocean View is only in Lahaina. Island View is only in Napili and is in terms of initial purchase price something of a steal - as a week owner you will almost certainly be given a higher floor villa with magnificent views of the West Maui mountains. Garden View is only in Lahaina and I've read mixed reviews of the villas owners have been given.
All that said, if you buy a fixed week you are in your villa in your tower during your week.
Napili has its own pool and bar. If you’re in Lahaina you’ll use, for better or worse, the main pool and bar. That’s more of a walk. If you’ve got youngish kids, that may be preferred. If not, like us, I greatly prefer Napili. I prefer being closer to Whaler’s Village, and I prefer having our own less crowded pool and poolside bar.
I'd add one more thing... it is a bit like deciding which bank account to put the million dollars in. They are both great and you can't go wrong with either one.

Here are two pictures - one of Napili oceanfront 8th floor taken this time last year and the second of Lahaina oceanfront 6th floor taken as I write this. The Lahaina picture will be posted in the subsequent post because the picture was too large for the server to process apparently.
We just got back about a week ago from a week on sixth floor ocean front in Napili. It was our first stay in the purpose-built towers and we loved it, particularly my wife. We own OV in the original towers, but my wife says staying there will never be the same again after staying in OF Napili. I'm generally fine with the original towers, but she was smitten by Napili!
As @StevenTing mentioned, Napili Villas has a much smaller parking garage than the main garage that is closest to Lahaina Villas, but we found that smaller garage easier to navigate than the very tight squeezes in the Lahaina garage. It's also only a two level garage, so no need to deal with the 11 floor or so elevator in the larger garage. The main problem with the Napili garage is if you get back from dinner late, that garage can fill up. One night we got the last spot and another night it was completely full so we valet parked. They gave us that one night free, but I found out later, that's not official policy, and the expectation is if the Napili garage is full, we should have parked in the main Lahaina garage. That means quite a long walk to the Napili Villas.
So, as others have said, both have their advantages, but we really like Napili Villas and the location. We didn't really have to go into the main building except to check in and check out, and it was a short walk from the Napili garage to the Napili building elevators. The lawn in front of Napili is also a great place that always has lounge chairs available, and on two days we went to the beach rental table right in front of Napili on the beach walk and rented an umbrella and two beach chairs for the day from MVC for $45. All in all it was a very pleasant place to stay.
I have never stayed in the Napili towers, we own in Lahaina. The ocean is so close you can touch it.
I don't love the condo so much, the lack of a full kitchen is a pain sometimes but the view is why I don't ever want to give it up.

I think you may be confusing the Lanai tower in the old hotel conversion property (which has a mini kitchen). All Lahaina tower units have full kitchens and washer/dryers.

FYI if you are considering a purchase, the official policy is (or at least was) that Sequel weeks owners staying in Napili get free valet parking if the Napili parking garage is full. I don't know what happens if you try to push it, but it happened to us once or twice both times we have stayed in Napili and the front desk took it off our bill at check out.

We are owners in the original towers, but were staying in Napili on Destination Points. We weren't charged by valet for the one night we had to valet, but before I checked out, I asked just to be sure. The front desk rep said official policy is no free valet, and we should have been charged, but that may be because we are not Napili owners, based on your info.
We stayed in the Napili tower last October and they had installed gates to limit access only to those who are staying in that tower. They said that was done to alleviate the problem of insufficient parking spaces. I suppose they could still be short of spots if some owners/guests have more than one vehicle per unit. Not sure.
We were fortunate that we found a spot each day or evening when we returned.
We are here now and and will always request Lahaina Villas -- we are partial to LV because we own June fixed weeks but we do love this tower. It is a little closer to the ocean than Napili and we like the room configuration (we like the long hallways in the '10 Lahaina stack and we don't love the '01 Napili stack view plan).
Maui never disappoints and happy to be here -- can see whales from the balcony which is a plus!

They appeared to be having issues with the Napili garage gates a couple weeks ago when we were there, as they were locked in the up position more than they were working, and on one or two occasions I saw people working on the control boxes. That said, the only times we had issues with finding a spot was after 8pm (got last spot) and after 9pm (had to valet). Even with those issues, I think we still prefer Napili garage over Lahaina garage because the Lahaina garage is so tight and the ramps so steep. We've felt tight just driving and parking a rental convertible (usually a Mustang or Camaro). I can't imagine trying to drive and park an SUV in that garage, but I HATE big cars. Even the Mustangs and Camaros seem big to me.
Are these 2 separate resorts, or not?
What are the differences of the resorts?
I am a 2 bedroom owner at Ko Olina.
If I want to get a 2 bedroom unit at the Maui Ocean Club- what is the best way - through II (and request months in advance) or via Destination Club Points.
Ideally I would like ocean front/ocean view (which is what I have in Ko Olina) if I come to Maui.
Full kitchen and full laundry facilities in the unit (whether 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom units at the Maui Ocean Club) are important.
I will have a car rental. So a garage near the unit would be nice
While not as convenient the older units have common laundry facilities. And many people bring an electric skillet in lieu of having a burner or oven. There is a microwave, toaster, coffeemaker and they’ll supply an electric kettle. Here’s a nice sized fridge. And, of course, grills outdoors. I was a bit wary but it worked out perfectly.
The older units are converted from the Marriott hotel so a studio is one old hotel room, a 1 BR two and a 2 BR three. One plus is the 1 BR has 2 bathrooms and the 2 BR has three. Def nice if anyone is using the sofa bed in the living room.
Of course the newer towers, being built as timeshares, have the interior amenities such as kitchen and W/D like Ko’Olina.
I’ve been there twice- on a 2 BR trade into the Lahaina tower- got a ground floor garden view room, and a 1 BR in the older section and got a 3rd floor magnificent OV room.
Thought I’d really miss the full villa but the limited kitchen worked great and definitely didn’t feel limited, even though a friend rented a studio so we were cooking for 4 adults when we ate in.
Obviously easier to get with points but managed to make trades in II using an MSU studio so you can get good trades in II. I missed getting a 2 BR because dates didn’t line up but there were 2BRs that have popped up.

Legally and functionally they are 2 separate resorts that share common facilities. There are many examples in the timeshare world of different resorts at a single property. Another MVC examples is Suset Pointe and Harbour Pointe. There are even examples of 2 or even 3 different resorts systems within a single property.
