Maui Kaanapali Beach Restoration

(Hopefully this will serve as an anchor discussion thread as this effort moves forward in the future.)

This project has been mentioned a few time in various threads, but the recent MOC spring newsletter got me surfing about for more info, as the project has been pushed to 2020...unfortunately.

The full document is very readable and is worth the effort, if not for just the historical descriptions and how weather and currents impact the area.

"During the late 19th century, thousands of skeletons were reportedly visible on and around Puʻu Kekaʻa, completely covering the sand."​

This is the original proposal with some pretty impressive 1988 to 2013 overhead photos of the beach.

Page 20 has an interesting visual predicting coastal erosion.

I initially thought they would do this outside of whale season, but apparently folks that actually know stuff have it being done during winter spring.

"Construction of the proposed project would take place during the fall and winter months.

The Federal resource agencies, including the National Marine Fisheries Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service both suggest that beach nourishment projects not be conducted during peak coral spawning and marine animal nesting and birthing season (spring and early summer). The proposed project is anticipated to have negligible impact on coral spawning or marine animal nesting/birthing."​

(DNLR) the project to move sand from offshore to the beaches stretching from Canoe
Beach (south of the Hyatt) to the Sheraton Blackrock is delayed until 2020. For more

Interesting document. We were there (MOC) in early March. The sand/beachfront was HUGE (widest I've ever seen it) in front of the Marriott, but quickly narrowed just a few yards south toward the Hyatt. Same thing the further north you went--almost non-existent by the Whaler Condos/Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Sheraton black rock had some sand, but very narrow/steep pitch.

Saw this in the MOC Spring Newsletter. Quite a large cost and undertaking, but the Kaanapali beach area will definitely benefits from the sand restoration efforts. I was a little disappointed it was delayed though.

Beach Re-nourishment

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DNLR), with funding from Ka’anapali Operators Association (KOA), of which Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club is a member, will begin a project to move sand offshore to the beaches stretching from Canoe Beach (south of the Hyatt) to the Sheraton Blackrock starting October 2019 – December 2020. This work will take place from 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., seven days a week.​

"An owner we work with quite frequently had sent us over an official notice from Marriott's Owner Services that they had received via email in January advising of the new scheduled start date. We unfortunately do not have any links or a document that we would be able to forward over to you to review, but feel free to reach out to Marriott's Owner Services directly and they should be able to forward over details to you directly."

The latest from the MOC Spring 2019 newsletter suggest a mixup somewhere...

I got a response from the source. They do not have a date for the restoration to begin:

Our apologies for the late response.

A representative with our Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands realizes that their website needs to be update.

He says project construction will not commence within those dates. He does not have a new start date to announce.
