Many good courses on Maui. If your golfer is mid-to-low handicap and money is no object - then Kapalua Plantation ($359) and sister Kapalua Bay Course ($229) would be where this person plays. Closest courses to Maui Ocean Club and where all Kaanapali resort guests (Marriott, Hyatt, Westin, etc.) have "discount" are at the two Kaanapali golf courses (Royal and Kai) but these will typically not be cheap - ($99 - $179 for Royal, $79 - $139 for Kai; cheaper rates usually by around 3 pm - which, depending on how fast your golfer plays, can finish the round before it's too dark to putt!). If golfer wants to golf a lot and at good value, here are some suggestions below. Unfortunately, unlike the 4 courses I mentioned above, they require a longer drive - back to Kahului area or Wailea area.
- Dunes at Maui Lani - GolfNow or TeeOff.com will have deals on these for $59 - $66 with cart. Very good track and condition. Great finishing hole and very good restaurant - patio overlooks finishing hole where you can cheer on (or jeer) your golfer!
- Pukalani - This is on the side of a volcano and has a cool par 3 that has an option to hit "safely" (for the girly-man golfers) or "over a ravine" (for the real men!)
. TeeOff has deals as low as $32!
- Maui Nui - This used to be called Elle Aire and was a private club. Good track in good condition. TeeOff has rates as low as $59 for a 2 pm teetime. On the way to Wailea.
- Kahili - This is also closer to Kahului and is next to a private club - King Kamehameha. Can be very windy but also good track. TeeOff has at $59 - $69 for mid-day teetime.
- Waiehou - This is a gem and is also the local municipal course (and, just to manage expectations, looks like a typical muni). They only take cash and you have to call in (no on-line). The golf course makes up for its not so perfect condition because it has awesome views (several holes are next to the ocean...depending on when you go, you can see whales breaching). Weekday rates $63. Weekend $75. Carts extra (you can use credit card for cart). Discount if military. You will meet some very interesting Kamaiina's on this course! Hard to find if going for first time.
- Wailea Blue - This golf course is in the Wailea area. There are several very upscale courses in this Wailea/Makena area and it will also cost you a pretty penny. Other than Blue, not too many appear on or can be accessed on GolfNow or TeeOff.
If your golfer will play Kapalua - make sure they aren't aerating the greens! That would be a real bummer if one paid so much and had to putt on sandy and bumpy greens...The pro shop will tell you when you make your reservation though but just in case....
Hope this helps. We'll be there 2 weeks from now and can't wait to hit all of the above!
