There are multiple mass transit systems in the Bay Area: Muni, BART, CalTrain, Golden Gate Transit, etc. You would do better checking their respective websites as needed depending on where you are going.

Personally, I would download an app that helps you plan your route using a variety of transit systems. Routsy seems to be a good one for the Bay Area.
Failing that, maybe what you're looking for is just a good, up-to-date guidebook with transit route maps. Or I'm sure you could call or email each transit network and ask them to mail you a map.

No need to check all the individual web sites. http://www.511.org is the consolidated web site that has information on all Bay Area transit, as well traffic and carpooling information. Very convenient.

ETA - When you get there, be sure to go to the Visitors Information Center at Hallidie Plaza -- right below the cable car stop at Powell and Market. They should have all the maps and information you'll need.

If you are just trying to get around San Francisco you can get a 7 day Muni pass for a very reasonable price and it includes the cable cars that are typically $5 per ride.

Cable car fare is now $7. per one way ride, no transfers accepted or issued. Regular bus/Muni Metro fares are $2.25, which includes a 90 minute transfer. Senior fare is $1.00, not valid on cable cars. A 7 day passport is $30. regardless of age. You can purchase this at Hallidae Plaza below Powel & Market (Tourism bureau).
