We were disappointed by Hudson's on our 1/5-1/12/25 trip--we had called to confirm that they still didn't take reservations (they don't.) My spouse spoke to a real person, so we showed up a night or two later, only to find that there were closed for the week for renovations. Might have been nice if the person my spouse spoke to had mentioned that: "Hey, just so you know, this is the last night we're open for the rest of the week....." We ate at Skull Creek Dockhouse instead, and enjoyed it greatly. My mother declared their she crab soup at least as good as Hudson's. While the view from inside is not as nice as Hudson's, it was still pretty.
We also tried to eat breakfast at Palmetto Bay Sunrise Cafe, only to get there to find that it, too, was closed for at least two weeks (might be nice if they thought to post any of this on the socials.) We ended up at Bad Biscuit and really enjoyed it. Huge portions--could have easily split some of the "open" biscuits they served. A very casual vibe, but great for a quick breakfast. Tasty.
Had a wonderful sunset view dinner at Old Oyster Factory. Is it just me mis-remembering, but weren't their hushpuppies traditionally served as complimentary bread service? I was fine paying for them, but thought they had used to be free.
Lastly, tried Giuseppe's pizza for the first time. Tasty. And the salads were huge--big enough for four of us to split one and feel that we each got at least one serving of veggies.
This is more new places than we've ever tried in a single week before. This was our first trip back to the island since 2019; it was also our 25th anniversary (within a day or two) of our first trip ever to HHI. We tend to cook a lot ourselves. We won the Iron Chef competition that week at Surfwatch. The ingredient was pineapple juice; we got shrimp from the farmer's market and made BBQ shrimp sliders on homemade Hawaiian pineapple sweet rolls, topped with a red cabbage vinegar/pineapple juice slaw. Each of the three parts of the dish included pineapple juice. One of the fellow teams commented: "Who travels with yeast?!?" Well, we do--we needed to make king cake for Epiphany, after all.
