We were disappointed by Hudson's on our 1/5-1/12/25 trip--we had called to confirm that they still didn't take reservations (they don't.) My spouse spoke to a real person, so we showed up a night or two later, only to find that they were closed for the week for renovations. Might have been nice if the person my spouse spoke to had mentioned that: "Hey, just so you know, this is the last night we're open for the rest of the week....." We ate at Skull Creek Dockhouse instead, and enjoyed it greatly. My mother declared their she crab soup at least as good as Hudson's. While the view from inside is not as nice as Hudson's, it was still pretty.

We also tried to eat breakfast at Palmetto Bay Sunrise Cafe, only to get there to find that it, too, was closed for at least two weeks (might be nice if they thought to post any of this on the socials.) We ended up at Bad Biscuit and really enjoyed it. Huge portions--could have easily split some of the "open" biscuits they served. A very casual vibe, but great for a quick breakfast. Tasty.

Had a wonderful sunset view dinner at Old Oyster Factory. Is it just me mis-remembering, but weren't their hushpuppies traditionally served as complimentary bread service? I was fine paying for them, but thought they had used to be free.

Lastly, tried Giuseppe's pizza for the first time. Tasty. And the salads were huge--big enough for four of us to split one and feel that we each got at least one serving of veggies. :)

This is more new places than we've ever tried in a single week before. :D This was our first trip back to the island since 2019; it was also our 25th anniversary (within a day or two) of our first trip ever to HHI. We tend to cook a lot ourselves. We won the Iron Chef competition that week at Surfwatch. The ingredient was pineapple juice; we got shrimp from the farmer's market and made BBQ shrimp sliders on homemade Hawaiian pineapple sweet rolls, topped with a red cabbage vinegar/pineapple juice slaw. Each of the three parts of the dish included pineapple juice. One of the fellow teams commented: "Who travels with yeast?!?" Well, we do--we needed to make king cake for Epiphany, after all. :D

One Hot Mama’s now open in new location in Park Plaza Center on Office Park Rd near Harris Teeter near Sea Pines (former Nectar location. Nectar is now on 278 in former Lucky Rooster spot).

What's a good fried chicken place? Or Thai? It's not clear if any are in the updated list.

FRIED CHICKEN:
As far as a restaurant, I really I don't know. (I'll share one "other" place near the end of this post.)

The places we love around home in Augusta GA (two in particular) are so good it makes me reluctant to recommend anyplace at Hilton Head.
The places that have served Fried Chicken in the past at Hilton Head are getting mixed reviews....one time it's good, the next time so-so.
Check online and see reviews.

Previous places mentioned most often are Annie O's, Chow Daddy's, Low Country Backyard, Ruby Lee's, Cahill's in Bluffton,
and Mama Joy's Kitchen.

I do know a place that has GREAT Fried Chicken at home, and they do have a store at HH. Their fried chicken is consistently superior
regarding the quality of the food and flavor, and that is the Publix Super Market at Island Crossing Shopping Center,
just down a block from the Greenwood Traffic Circle.

(At home, Publix's fried chicken is AWESOME, and our family's favorite, tied with one other spot.)

Hilton Head Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/gEE7U1qxNKmTtcAr9

You would need to call them and order a box of it, and you can give a time you'd like it to be ready for pick-up.
If they do their usual thing, it'll be a full, hot, fresh box of varying pieces, as you wish to order. YUM!
Let me know how it turns out!

********UPDATE, 2 days later: I asked around the island yesterday and today in various restaurants at which we've dined this weekend.
Mostly asked the servers (and two restaurant owners) who know the most about "other places".
Got great feedback for Publix Super Market---everyone loves their fried chicken, and my wife still continues to say it's the best....
and having had it many many times myself, I concur.
It's always cooked perfectly and has delicious flavor. Fat juicy pieces, golden brown....just great.
I would definitely CALL PUBLIX and order a box.....check how they come---8 pieces, etc, or more or less.

FYI our last couple meals from the first one, Ruan Thai (that's on Park Ln. but can be seen from 278) weren't very good. It looked and tasted as though it had been cooked in advance. I think others are also finding the same because there are very seldom more than one or two cars in the parking lot.

Our opinion about Thai Smile, excellent! It's our current go-to.

We only just realized a couple weeks ago that Ruan Thai Hut is at Main Street; it looks very pretty from the outside and we'll definitely give it a try (and will update here when that happens.)

Thanks so much Susan for the input....very good to know, and I do trust your judgment and taste immensely.

However, the THAI restaurants listed in that post of mine (post 931) were merely just a random thought,
as none of them are currently on my list (never been to any of them) and may never be on my list unless I visit them and decide they are worthy.
Thai food is not a favorite of mine "so far", so that could take a while if I should choose to partake...(Maybe I do need to broaden my horizons, huh?)
I do know it's VERY popular, though, and welcome the education that may follow from someone else's exploits.
Anyway, I didn't mean for anyone to assume those were part of any Recommendation List. (Even so, sorry Ruan Thai was disappointing!)

My official restaurant list, as everyone knows, contains only places we have been to and really like.
We have been to every one that's presently on the list; that's why I refer to them as tried and true.

In listing the three Thai places, I was only trying to address the poster's question in post # 930, and direct some further research on his/her part....ie "Places to try".
I simply looked up some places that served Thai food at HH and read the reviews quickly.
Thought it might help to make a short list, and maybe to generate more interest and info from someone else's experience and perspective.

***********************************************
Sort of a similar approach for places that "serve Fried Chicken", also first mentioned in post 930 and responded to in post 931,
although I have been to most of those fried chicken places I listed there. I did state that they all had "mixed reviews".
Seeing as I don't generally recommend places that have a lot of MIXED REVIEWS, even if I like them,
I didn't mean to consider what I said to be a bona fide list of Fried Chicken places to seek out.
It was meant only to serve as "places to check out online" and see what someone thinks, but again not my list per se.

That said, I do love fried chicken, but I haven't been moved to be that specific in my list so as to focus on chicken alone.
Again, like the Thai food, my intent was to answer the request in post 930 the best I could as to places that served it,
and based on that knowledge recommend a path for searching.
Luckily I was at HH at the time the question was posed (just returned home today), so I began to ask around the island and search further.

That's not how I have done the rest of my list, as I recommend only those places I've been to, and are well worth visiting, imho.
Since I did have experience with Publix fried chicken (in general and at home), however, I thought I would mention that one single place
as an out-and out recommendation, because it was consistently so good.

I hope my "additional info" in post 931 was helpful, but again it wasn't meant to be tried & true like my official list, or definitive in any way.
I'm very open to hear other opinions at any time. That's how we all learn, and frankly how I slowly found out about each and every restaurant
at which I've dined at HH, going back a long time. I'll never forget the time that one of my colleagues recommended that we try Santa Fe over 2 decades ago,
and low and behold it became our favorite restaurant, and I'm almost 100% sure it'll remain that way for years to come.
*****************************************************************

Addendum:
It's truly amazing how the restaurant scene at Hilton Head only gets better with time........the new places are numerous this year, again,
and they're different and diverse, and all are quite good! And as expected the old places continue to stay packed.
Cannot imagine a place so small as HHI could have so many outstanding and unique restaurants to enjoy.
We definitely go to HH for the beautiful beaches and pools, BUT I'll never deny or disclaim that what actually gets me there more and more
often now is the awesome restaurants. My wife and I crave certain meals there, and that includes a LOT of specific choices,
so guess what, we HAVE TO book more weekends to run over and satisfy those urges.

Understood, Marty - I'm not lobbying for you to add any restaurants to your list based only on my recommendation, only doing what you're doing and trying to give people ideas if they ask for them. :)

We're really disappointed with our recent Ruan Thai experiences because prior to the last couple times it was our favorite. I don't know if it's had an ownership change or something else but there are so few restaurants on the island that serve "Asian-inspired" food that it's sad to lose one. Hopefully it'll come back to its former glory. :)

Speaking of fried chicken, Don's definitely an expert on it but he limits himself for obvious reasons. Publix is his go-to! But even though we're fans of Jane's Bistro that's the only fried chicken meal he'll tell people NOT to get. Something about "it's not true southern friend chicken on the bone but a boneless cutlet that may as well be covered in tomato sauce and served with pasta." It was one of the regular daily specials on Jane's menu, I'm not even sure if it still is, but if it is, you've been warned. :)

Another FYI, Madre Social Kitchen & Bar (https://madremercadohhi.com) has recently opened in the space next to Gruby's Deli in the Fresh Market plaza mid-island (former space of Bonefish Grill that closed in 2020.) Tapas, Enchiladas, Tacos, Fajitas ... all the things you'd expect from the name. They did extensive renovations and the room is airy, bright and welcoming, leaning towards upscale, with a few tables outside the front door.

We haven't been yet but we're hearing very good things from friends and neighbors who have.

Nectar has now reopened in their new location on William Hilton Parkway. (At former location of the Lucky Rooster).

While I'm in the thread - Nectar is doing a booming business in their new location! The parking lot is always full, not just with diners but also with many people quickly in and out for take-home service. It's one of our favorites on the island, and the Bluffton location is also a favorite for lunch on Farmer's Market Thursdays. :)

I thought I'd post updates regarding restaurants who maintain high quality and freshness when ordering takeout. Franky Bones and Wise Guys both do a great job with takeout. We actually had Franky Bones three times in two weeks because we liked it so much. The Rainbow Trout and salmon are excellent and fresh hot bread is provided. We also really like the white pizza at Bella Italia (unless you don't like garlic). All three are very convenient when staying at Surf Watch or Barony. We will have to try Nectar on our next visit.

Although a little off topic, this is about food. We buy a lot of our meat at Fresh Market and take advantage of their specials. I was pleasantly surprised to find they have the same specials on the same days as our stores in Cincinnati. Tuesdays have boneless, skinless chicken breasts and ground chuck on sale for $3.99 (ground sirloin for $4.99), and whole salmon on Friday for $8.99 lb. All are excellent. The marinated pork chops (on Thr) are great for grilling. Timing may change, but their specials for high quality meat and seafood are worth shopping.

Real coincidence, Susan, but last night Mona and I went to my "old neighborhood classmate reunion" for my very closest friends who grew up together
(friendships began in Kindergarten and went thru High School) and the host had picked up hot, fresh Publix Fried Chicken for everyone and it was absolutely delicious.
We all brought various other side dishes, desserts, etc. (Enjoying leftover chicken for late afternoon lunch right now!)
Publix is personally one of our two choices for go-to fried chicken, along with amazing fried chicken from The Wife Saver, a local and still legendary family restaurant
that has 3-4 locations around our city, only.

[[[ Quick aside: When we used to go to the University of Georgia home games in Athens, GA (slightly over an hour away,
and we had special Club Level season tickets for 40+ years),
we would always pick up Wife Saver fried chicken the morning before the games to take to the Tailgate, and it's a miracle that the chicken would make it to the game
because it smelled so good as we traveled to the game. We put in the far back of the SUV so we couldn't get to it, lol!
"Everybody else" in town also picked it up for Game Day, so you had to order a week ahead and pick it up at the crack of dawn.........
but it made for wonderful memories throughout the years.]]]

I definitely think that at Hilton Head the go-to spot for Fried Chicken is Publix..........If they're consistent between stores, then it will be amazing.
(Hey, just a thought when thinking of Dean and his HUGE annual family reunion at Grande Ocean, they SHOULD do a big fried chicken dinner
and pick up boxes and boxes of hot, fresh, juicy, delicious fried chicken from Publix!!!! I'm drooling already.
I think I just might drive over to HH and pretend to be a long lost cousin if he were to do that.......

So where do you go to eat after 10 during the week? We went to the theater on Thursday and could not find a place with an open kitchen. This surprised us since we frequently ate at Wise Guys after shows at the Lean Ensemble. We’d also go to Steet Meet after the theater but they had chairs piled on top of the tables and we didn’t go in. We have eaten there in the past after the theater.

Hinchey's? IHOP? Club Seats Grill? Other than IHOP, not sure what time the kitchen closes though.

I only know of one place......Hilton Head Diner, not so romantic, but the food is good, lol.......
believe it or not, the steak & eggs are very good.....(steak is delicious).

Here is my thoughts, with photos, on a few places we went to while on HHI in January. Note, we aren't big foodies and Tex-Mex is perhaps our favorite type of food.

The British Open Pub - I love English style fish and chips. While this looked the part it was just meh. The tartar sauce didn't have a lot of flavor but the fish was crunchy and I happy that they had a beer batter. Fish coated in breadcrumbs should be banned. This was okay but probably wouldn't go back for fish and chips.
IMG_7574.jpg

The Smokehouse - My wife and I had the same thing, pulled pork. We do love BBQ and this was pretty good though we weren't a fan of their regular BBQ sauce. It had a very ketchup and vinegar taste. Not sweet enough for me.
IMG_7534.jpg

Tio's Latin American Kitchen - You can tell we like Tex-Mex because we came here twice in our 12 days on Hilton Head Island. My wife and I love a chimichanga and got the same both times. We went for Early Bird each time where you could get a chimi with chips and queso for $20. We used much of the queso to top our chimi. This was very good though I was a little perturbed on our second visit. My wife won the rock and roll bingo and received a $5 Tio's cash card. Basically $5 off that they refused to let us use for that meal. Seems kinda skimpy in my opinion when there are no restrictions listed on the card (just like a business card). I wonder if they will refuse to take it when we ever go back, who knows when, even though there is no expiration date on the card.
IMG_7593.jpg

Giuseppi's Pizza - One of the best pizzas we had during our trip and we also got to-go pizza from New York City Pizza and Dough Boy's. If I were ranking them, it would probably also be in that same order, best to worst. Though Dough Boy's wasn't bad. It was still very good. Just a photo here of the pizza from Giuseppi's and one of their apps.
IMG_7737.jpg
IMG_7740.jpg

Skull Creek Dockside - This was great! My wife ordered the pulled pork and she liked their sweet sauce better here than at The Smokehouse. I ordered the fried chicken. Great flavor and the portions were HUGE!
IMG_7911.jpg
IMG_7912.jpg

French Bakery - The best part of this breakfast was the company. It was great meeting Mona and @jme for breakfast on a Sunday morning. We even drove all the way from Sea Pines for it! My wife and I both had French Toast (though only hers is pictured) and the Cappuccino made for a pretty photo. The food was good, though it doesn't beat our favorite breakfast spot in the country which is Butterfield's Pancake House in Scottsdale Arizona. If you've ever been to a KiKi's Breakfast Cafe, I would put it on par with that. Which is very good. We would likely return, but perhaps during the weekday when it isn't so busy.

Per Jeremy's (dioxide45's) comments, great places for Fish & Chips at Hilton Head imho would include Black Marlin Bayside Grill
and Big Bamboo near the Coligny Traffic Circle (who claims to do it the English way, and I confess it was delicious when I ordered it last week).
These would be my first two choices, altho many seafood places do offer it.
Big Bamboo is not (yet) on my HH list, so I'll have to dine there a couple more times to evaluate that.
We were there because a big group invited us to join them, and we did....it was really good, so I'll see. Small place but good food and service.

And YES, it was fantastic dining with Jeremy & Melissia at French Bakery recently, a definite highlight of our stay at HH.......thanks Jeremy & Melissia, great people!

Skull Creek Dockside - This was great! My wife ordered the pulled pork and she liked their sweet sauce better here than at The Smokehouse. I ordered the fried chicken. Great flavor and the portions were HUGE!

Hey Jeremy, looks like you're trying to muscle in on Marty's turf ;)
More importantly, when will you be posting your review and comparisons of all the Mariott HHI resorts? Will it be on Tug or on your You Tube site? looking forward to it. Im glad you got to spend extended time at HHI and also had the good fortune to meet up and break
bread ,actually French Toast, with Marty and his better half Mona. Going down to HH and meeting up with M&M is always one of the high points of our year. Next time. try to meet up with them at one of their favorite spots, Boston, Charleston, Asheville or Williamsburg for a dining experience you'll never forget.

Ate at the new, opened nine days when we ate there, Local Legends Brewing Company part of the SERG group. It’s off of 278 by the Circle. Food was passable but I don’t think we will be returning any time soon. Why? It’s the noisiest restaurant we have been in in years; blasting recorded music. I feel sorry for the employees. They have a massive outdoor section but with the pollen this year eating outside was a no go.

Interesting that SERG opened up a Brewery in HH. Most Breweries are not known for their food. Dare I ask how was the Beer?
