Here here for all the great well deserved kudos to Marty, Jont, Susan and all.

We are currently in Hilton Head staying at Marriott’s Grande Ocean with friends, on an Encore package. We got a great Ocean front Villa on the 5th floor of the Starfish building. The entire staff could not be nicer or more accommodating! It’s been a long time since we’ve been here but we’re glad to be back.

Dining so far has been :
- Benny’s Coastal Kitchen, the recent addition to the Hudson/ Bennys Seafood Market group. Dinner was very good, but the menu was a bit limited. Highly recommend the fish stew! The upstairs bar/ lounge area overlooking the water is beautiful, specious and uncrowded.
- pomodori Italian Eatery last night for our party of 6. Our Meal was excellent but we were kept waiting for almost 30 minutes for our reservation at 6:45pm. The other couple with us were locals who frequently visit here and were quite upset about the long wait.

We’re planning to play golf today at Oyster Reef. Any dinner suggestions for our last 2 nights here (not Italian again). Not sure if we can get into Sage, as we didn’t make a reservation but it doesn’t seem too crowded here on the island this week.

Thanks.

Brian, hello buddy!
...glad you got back to HH and also that MGO gave you a fantastic unit assignment. The view from 5th floor there is nice,
and the weather this time of year is usually ideal!!
As for the restaurant wait to be seated (despite a reservation), we too had a recent wait of 20-30 minutes at another great restaurant,
but at Hilton Head I'm sure it was because of one of three things: 1.The restaurant being short-staffed (with little recourse there),
2.The sheer popularity of the place with a full list of reservations, or 3.Guests "camping out" and overstaying their welcome by chatting on & on.
Maybe even a combination of those. And remember Pomodori is a very small place and has a strong local following....lots of "regulars",
(and a table for 6 might have complicated matters).
When we had to wait recently, even tho it could have been aggravating, we stated to each other that we were happy to be there at HH
and then proceeded to have a drink and enjoy the pre-dinner conversation.
I tend to give any restaurant the benefit of the doubt in those situations---I'm sure they don't like it either.

Lucky for most places at HH, wait times WITH reservations tend to be minimal and infrequent.
Hope you had a great time, and hope you get back more in the future.
We're not due back at HH until January and will dearly miss it, but we'll be VERY busy with other Fall trips to Charleston (3 two-night weekends),
Virginia twice (Williamsburg & another "secret place" unbeknownst to my wife), St Michael's MD overlooking Chesapeake Bay, and Asheville NC.
As much as we love Hilton Head, we adore the annual Fall trips and the mountains FAR more.
For the first time in years we'll be skipping Boston and New England in October, but we'll still be enjoying the gorgeous foliage in other places.
Take care.

I just wanted to comment about our trip To and From Hilton Head. We flew from Newark directly to HHH airport on United, the first time we have done this vs. flying to SAV. What a pleasure and great way to go! Although it’s very small, the airport accommodates several flights a day via United, American and Delta. The convenience of getting your luggage quickly, easy car rental on premise and 20 minutes to MGO was great.

On our return, getting to HHH, just an hour before our flight boarding time was so convenient and getting thru check-in and security was a breeze.
Unfortunately, this United flight is seasonal service which will end in October sometime.

They are doing construction at the airport which looks like it will add additional gates to the two that are there now.

I live in the DC area, and we have had seasonal direct flights from Dulles on United and its a game changer for sure. Last year prices went way up, but there's nothing better than getting off the plane and then mashing up against everyone else to get your luggage 25 feet away from the rental car counter. The "gates" are interesting too.

I was excited when I saw UA was now flying direct from EWR to HHH but given the cost of the flights are 2, 3 or 4 times what it cost to fly into SAV or CHS I will be sticking with those airports. It doesn't hurt that Charleston & Savannah are such great cities to spend a few hours in on your way in or out of HH also.

Here are 15 best restaurants on Hilton Head, SC, Southern Living says. A Food Network star owns one BY LYN RIDDLE OCTOBER 05, 2024 6:00 AM | Hilton Head Social Bakery was open only a week before Hurricane Matthew hit Hilton Head Island in October. Its owner decided to keep his doors open.
. From a restaurant owned by a Food Network star to a French bakery owned by an award-winning chef and a 50-year-old eatery that serves seafood from locally owned fishing fleets, Hilton Head Island’s culinary scene was featured in a recent Southern Living story. And ranked. Coming in at No. 1 was Hilton Head Social Bakery, owned and operated by French chef Philippe Feret, originally from Normandy, France, who reopened Windows on the World after the 9-11 bombing destroyed the World Trade Center. He came to Hilton Head in search of less frenetic work he experienced in a number of famed Paris and New York restaurants. He and his co-owner and wife Marissa have two locations on Hilton Head — Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina and South Island — which Southern Living said offer “beautiful, photo-perfect pastries, decadent desserts, and buttery croissants galore. You’ll feel as if you’ve been magically transported to the streets of Paris.” hiltonheadsocialbakery.com

Second on South Living’s list is Lulu Kitchen, described as “American favorites with a Southern twist.” The magazine recommends butter-poached lobster, short rib grilled cheese, and house fried chicken. “Come for lunch, dinner, or Sunday brunch and bask in the cheery, laid-back setting,” the magazine said. lulukitchen-hhi.com

3. The Sea Shack, “no-frills, counter-serve restaurant” Southern Living calls a gem. Grilled, fried, or blackened seafood fresh from the sea. TOP VIDEOS “Expect to wait in line during peak summer months — The Sea Shack is popular with locals and tourists alike,” the magazine said seashackseafood.com

4. Chez Georges, a French bistro with escargots de bourgogne, cassoulet, and two kinds of moules-frites. There’s an impeccable wine list and an aperitif hour from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Friday, “when adult beverages are $2 off and there’s a small plates menu offered.” chezgeorgeshhi.com

5. Nectar Farm Kitchen, locally sourced ingredients, serving breakfast, lunch (think sausage biscuits and gravy) and dinner. They also serve country fried steak and a slew of Benedicts. “Hearty ‘supper plates and bowls’ include Lowcountry cioppino, root beer-braised short ribs, and filet mignon, alongside lighter fare like salads and soups,” the magazine said. The Hilton Head location has closed but the Bluffton location, 8 miles up the road, remains open. It is one of the Serg Group Restaurants. nectarfarmkitchen.com

6. Coast — waterfront views and twinkly-lit outdoor patio is located in Sea Pines Resort, a 5,000 acre (a third of the island) development and first on the island. Visionary Charles Fraser developed Sea Pines Plantation in the late 1950s. As expected, Coast serves seafood, but also has sandwiches, tacos and a raw bar. “Wash it all down with a frozen specialty cocktail,” Southern Living said.

7. Skull Creek Boathouse, also a Serg Group restaurant, is located beside Skull Creek and overlooks the marina. It has multiple dining areas, including an indoor sushi bar with raw oysters, ceviche, and sashimi, and an outdoor bar with Adirondack chairs and sunset views. “Don’t leave without trying the famed salt and vinegar crab cakes,” Southern Living said. skullcreekboathouse.com

8. The Lucky Rooster Kitchen + Bar, whose tagline is American bistro with Southern soul. Southern LIving calls it “refined comfort food” and recommends deviled eggs topped with smoked salmon, bacon, tomato, and parsley or scallops and shrimp finished in a cognac cream sauce and served with Charleston red risotto. luckyroosterhhi.com
9. Black Marlin Bayside Grill, another Serg Group restaurant, is known for its Bayside Chowder. The restaurant calls itself “taste of the keys” with views of Broad Creek and a wide ranging menu from burgers to fish tacos. blackmarlinhhi.com

10. Burnt Church Distillery, located in Bluffton, has a 7,000 square-foot tasting room, gift shop, humidor, history room, and on-site manufacturing facility. It calls itself spirits with a story to tell, that can be paired with a charcuterie board or brick-oven pizza. burntchurchdistillery.com

11. Nunzio Restaurant + Bar Traditional Italian food, including Pugliese-style meatballs to homemade ravioli to tagliatelle alla bolognese. For dessert, Southern Living says try lemon sorbet or hot chocolate soufflé cake served with vanilla gelato. nunziohhi.com

12. Hudson’s Seafood House On The Docks, is the 50-year-old seafood joint overlooking Port Royal Sound. “Seafood doesn’t come fresher than this — Hudson’s sources its fish and shrimp directly from one of only two remaining local fishing fleets on Hilton Head,” the magazine said. “Always order the specials, which can change multiple times a day depending on what’s being unloaded from the boats. hudsonsonthedocks.com

13. One Hot Mama’s, operated by Food Network star and barbecue pit mistress Orchid Paulmeier, who offers among many other things baby-back ribs and chicken wings in many variations. The restaurant is part of the official South Carolina Barbecue Trail. “Dishes like the Stack A Mac (fried mac and cheese bites topped with queso, chopped brisket, Perfect 10 barbecue sauce, coleslaw, and scallions) are sure to stick in your mind for years to come,” Southern Living said.
The Hilton Head location will be moving down Greenwood Drive into the building where Nectar, another SERG Restaurant Group used to be located.
It is a Serg Group restaurant. onehotmamas.com

14. Fishcamp on Broad Creek on the site of a fish camp built there in 1955. “Housed in the camp’s original building, you’ll find fried shrimp and blue crab cakes served with a side of history and nostalgia,” Southern Living said. Lunch and dinner daily, brunch on Sundays. fishcamphhi.com

15, Marley’s Shrimp and Burger Shack, permanently closed Sept, 14, its Facebook page said. It was owned by the Serg Group, which promises a new concept in the spring of next year. The Serg Group started with a pizzeria on Hilton Head in 1984 and now owns more than a dozen restaurants.

How does a Bakery rank #1?
Eating croissants and other desserts does not rank as a meal.

#6--the Coast?--that is a complete joke with sub par food.

A lot of other not so great places on that list as well.

We were thoroughly underwhelmed at Fishcamp, and two of the places are closed???

I'll stick to Marty's list.

A lot of places face ongoing challenges, such as being understaffed----not only at Hilton Head but anywhere else.
And naturally that can lead to all kinds of problems. Staffing issues, imho, has become the scourge of the restaurant business.
It's become increasingly difficult to find good people to work. In fact it's a different world out there across the board in all businesses, sad to say.
We've been to Fishcamp many times and we've never had a bad meal or experience there. But if anyone had a less than pleasurable
time, I'm disappointed to hear that, and will take note.
Coast was very good when it opened and for several years afterward, but I've heard only this year that it's gone downhill.
We've not been there lately, so again I'll take note and perhaps remove it. Any info is always appreciated.

Nectar Hilton Head to Re-Open in December

If you recall, Nectar Farm Kitchen in Hilton Head closed this fall to allow SERG to relocate One Hot Mama's into that space. We just got an email from SERG and they have found a new location for Nectar in the space formerly occupied by The Lucky Rooster on William Hilton Parkway. I didn't know The Lucky Rooster had even closed. Below is the graphic from the email. Supposed to open in December.
